A nice little message about some geologic processes and things geologic column. Alas, a presentation sadly marred by the lack of pretty pictures .

Added by edit - Added the smilie. Mostly a comment relating to all of Calypsis4's pretty pictures. Having relevant geo-pictures would be wonderful but may well not be a practical possibility. It's considered bad form to bring in graphics via sucking up someone elses bandwidth. You need to have such stored at some variety of your own site.

Arphy for an honest attempt
Message 155 in Transitional Fossils and Quote Mining
Arphy may be nearly 100 % wrong and he'll get the post shredded in the next day or so (if people work at it) but he has made a good honest effort and the post is clear and well structured. It isn't all on topic but he's done no worse on that than most of us most of the time.

Re: Arphy for an honest attempt
Yeah I get why you nominated this. In the name of constructive debate we need more Arphy's on the creationist side of things.
I'll second this as a valid and genuine attempt to present an argument that I disagree with but that is heartfelt and honest and relatively well argued in it's execution.

Re: Arphy for an honest attempt
I'm frankly stunned. That was one of the most outstanding posts by a creationist I've ever seen. Arphy understood what Patterson was saying, and he raised the right points and asked the right questions. With all the quote mining we've seen lately I kept expecting Arphy to veer off into misinterpretations of Patterson, but he never did that. He instead asked pretty much the same questions that were occurring to me as I read Patterson's comments.
It isn't obvious that the Earth orbits the sun. We only know this because of mountains of little pieces of data gathered over centuries. We all know about the expanding universe, but how many of us are familiar enough with the detailed data and history to recount how we know this.
In the same way, it isn't obvious that evolution is responsible for the diversity of life. We only know about evolution because of mountains of little items of data gathered over centuries. We all know the basic principles of descent with modification and natural selection are supposed to work, but how many of us are familiar enough with the detailed data and history to recount how we can be so certain that evolution is how it really happened. I hope the evolutionists put in the necessary time and effort to explain it all.

I'm frankly stunned as well
Umm.... Thanks
Hope my latest replies in this thread don't cause you to take back your nominations by veering "off into misinterpretations of Patterson" . I think they are consistent but maybe i should have stopped while i was ahead Unfortunatly I only read this just now.
Cheers,
Arphy

Modulous on Education
Message 19
This is so excellently laid out it is hard to pick a bit to represent it but the final paragraph seems to be pretty good on it's own:
But no doubt that will cause upset by the creationists. Just about anything you do will be considered controversial by one side of the debate or another no doubt - hence why my prime advice is to not go down that route at all and just teach the evolution exists, is in conflict with a literal interpretation of Genesis and you can debate some of the ways to handle this conflict.
That is, take a totally different tack than others have been discussing.
Good work, Mod!

The paragraph I really liked:
That's when I realized that they don't think at all like we do! We're trying to construct an integrated and self-consistent world-view by learning all we can about the world; everything we learn needs to fit together for it all to make any sense. They're not trying to build a consistent world-view; they're just attacking science. We cannot in honesty hold to several ideas that all directly contradict each other, whereas creationists have no problem doing that. So they can claim that the earth can't be more than 10,000 years old and that it's millions of years old, just so long as either (or a multitude of other estimates of the age of the earth) all contradict what science says. They will even include other claims that have absolutely nothing to do with evolution or creation or the age of the earth (eg, the ozone layer) if those claims constitute an attack against science.
I offhand think the above quoted might not be representative of all young Earth creationists, but I does characterize at least some of the more feverent ones.
Any further comment should go to the source topic.

A nice 2 pronged message.
First of all, I think it was some nice commentary relevant to the topic's theme.
Secondly, it was valuable in dealing with a sticky moderation issue. The one forum moderator who was by far best suited for dealing with the topic was also one of the primary debaters in the topic.
Thank you for both prongs.
