Re: Afro Cuban anyone?
I was on an overseas flight and found Celia Cruz on the in-flight CD collection. Just wow!

One of the best. I figured Granny would know her though, so I didn't add her to my list.
Every Sunday my mom would clean the entire house while Celia played loud as can be on the record player. Man did I hate that as a kid - Lol.

Re: Spanish Bolero or Cuban Bolero???
Hey Oni,
Thanks for the reply and youtube link. Unfortunately, I can't receive such links at work. And when I tried at home, I got an error message for that particular site that read "temporarily unavailable". WTF? Grrr.
Sooooo, I did some investigating and checked out what I thought were similar youtube sites . . .
It seems confusing. Perhaps you can untangle. Here's what I found:
There IS a Spanish Bolero as well as a Cuban Bolero. Check out:
Bolero - Wikipedia
Since there seems to be a real difference between the two, I am GUESSING you might have meant to correctly write Cuban Bolero? From my very limited knowledge and recent perusing of such music, the Cuban Bolero seems more somber, relaxed, old styled, simple? I can understand why you would favor a cigar and vino while listening. OTOH, Spanish Bolero SEEMS to be a little more cheery, happy, a LITTLE more complex? However, without understanding the Spanish lyrics, I could be utterly wrong.
I previously mentioned habanera music that my friends introduced to me in Catalonia, Spain:
Habanera - Wikipedia(music)
(Habanera, a genre of CUBAN popular dance music of the 19th century that was imported in Spain, specifically the Med coastal areas of Catalonia, by fishermen and traders returning from Cuba.)
Maybe you are already familiar with Habanera? I am unsure, but it seems Spanish Bolero and Catalonian Habanera music MAY be related or even the nearly the same thing. However, again, not being able to read or understand Spanish, I may be at a handicap to fully understand.
To add confusion, the opera Carmen often seems to be referenced when googling Habanera music. I am GUESSING it is only because they share the same geographic area. But, again, perhaps there is more to it. I should email my Spanish friends for more info.
I noted your additional examples in Message 21 of this thread. I find this all rather interesting, so I'll check em' out.
As you can tell by the above, music is one of the things I find interesting when I travel. I TRY to videotape live music of everyplace I go. Even if it is only children singing some simple nursery school songs in their native language. My last trip to western china I had the opportunity to videotape an awesome muslim tamboura player jamming.
I love most violin music and with my interest in world music, I've become keen on Klezmer music:
Klezmer - Wikipedia
I greatly dislike it when the accordion is featured on happy Klezmer tracks, but love it when the violin is featured on very simple haunting tunes.
And writing of violin players, I love Vanessa-Mae. I hope to see her in concert someday.
Vanessa-Mae - Wikipedia
I grew up listening to this music at all the family gatherings, so it has history with me. I hated it then, I absolutely love it now
I wonder if this is common. My siblings remember the german drinking songs my non-german father played at parties when we were small. We didn't appreciate the songs then, but they give us all warm and fuzzies now. As it was probably then as it is now, I suppose a heavy flow of beer helps.

I hated it then, I absolutely love it now - weird.
Kinda like sauerkraut, girls, and yardwork.
I've listened to Buena Vista Social Club; a roommate of mine in college introduced me to them, as well as Stevie Ray and Tower of Power. There was a band some of my friends were in at the time called "Wallace Hartley and the Titanics", which played mostly 70's funk cover tunes. Not sure if they're still around, but they kicked ass.
I'll check out some of your other suggestions...thanks!
Have a good one.

Re: You want a list?
Hey Coyote.
Wanna make something of it, oh ye of lesser tastes?
Not to be a hater here, but Neil Diamond? Really? If I had a penny for every time I couldn't get "Sweet Caroline" out of my damn head, I'd have, well, at least a couple bucks.
A crazy ex-girlfriend of mine from college dragged me kicking and screaming to a N. Diamond concert in Fargo in the '90s. Her parents bought the tickets, which were right down in front (the man passed within 3 feet of me), and I got in deep shit, apparently since I didn't show enough appreciation for the music. During the concert, I had to get up to pee, and ended up walking around the concourse for about a half hour. I just couldn't go back in.
Sorry man, didn't mean to rail.
But Neil Diamond? Really?
Have a good one.

Re: You want a list?
Yup, really.
Since the late '60s.
Never could get into that more recent stuff that tries to pass itself off as music (i.e., everything from the early '70s on).
And if that doesn't start a war nothing will!

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: You want a list?
It'll be legal soon anyway.
Y'know, not to derail this fine coffee house thread, but from someone in the industry of pharmaceuticals, HELL YES! Every time I think about the stigma with which the chronic is abused day in and day out, I get sick. If it's fine for cancer patients, then WTF????? Just my .02.
Would it not be for the fact that I could not only lose my job but my license to practice, I'd be growing the shit myself.

I didn't realize you were that old. You don't come off as that old.
I don't know if that a compliment or not

Except Country. Country is horrible, a blight upon the Earth, an auditory pestilence.

Hey Rahvin.
What's funny is that after I posted that comment, I intended to come back later and edit it to say, "...except country. Anything but country."
Thanks for saving me the edit. (As I type this slightly longer reply, ironically)

It's all relative, right?
FYI, I wasn't alive in the early 60s but was in the early 70s.
You?

Country bars are fun and the women in tight jeans are always a nice sight.
I'll allow it to exist for selfish reasons.
