Re: Self-deprecating humor
By the front picture I thought this was making fun of Christa McAuliffe, but it's not. You don't hear her mentioned much anymore, nice to see she's remembered, even if briefly.

How to fail a test with dignity!
I found a bunch of webpages in response to the Google search "how to fail a test with dignity," and they didn't all have the same examples. So do the search, click on a few of the links, and have a few laughs.

Apple Copycat Adds from the EDA Industry
Not everyone will appreciate these ads from the EDA industry (Electronic Design Automation), but I thought they were pretty cute. Synopsys is the big gorilla in automated design and Oasys is a challenger. These ads were shown in the Oasys booth at the recent Design Automation Conference in Anaheim:

Re: The last performance of George Carlin
Is anyone else having a sound problem with this one:
[AbE: Viewed it at home, sound was fine there, sentiments expressed weren't]
I looked it up at YouTube and there wasn't any sound there, either:
Other videos seem to work fine for me.

Doesn't the mere existence of Basil combined with our own insecurities cast fear into everyone? "What if I'm as dumb as ole Basil," we might think. "If I was that dumb then I wouldn't even know it. I could be speaking complete idiocies at this very moment and not even know it."
I think I'll shut up now.

Aw, what a shame, ole Basil was defeated, now you comedians are going to have to work and scrape for a living just like the rest of us! You had George Bush for 8 years, and just as you thought the well was going dry Sarah Palin comes along and showers you comedians with material. And you want Basil, too? Sheesh!
On a related note, I bet all you liberals were surprised that Republicans were so astute as to give ole Basil only 0.5% of the vote. Bet you thought he was a shoo-in, huh!

Re: Scammer
Make up some reason why you don't want to go ahead with his plan, but mention that the non-profit you work for is looking for representatives in Iraq to disburse aid money, and does he know anyone in Iraq that could be their representative there. If this person can make his way to Baqubah (dangerous place, even for Iraq) then the funds and instructions can made available there.
The guy's IP address should be stashed in his email header somewhere, so you should be able to check where his email is really coming from.

Re: Rrhain made a commercial?
Okay, I'll bite: That ad's so gay.
What's more interesting is that some people believe ad's like this can influence language use. It's one thing to introduce new jargon, another to discourage it. I wonder if the ad will have any impact, other than as something interesting to comment on.

Re: a few years back...
Keep posting your stuff. What about this routine makes you call it, "Not your best work." In my own opinion what weakened it most was that there were 5 or 6 instances where the comedian persona broke down for a mere second or two at most to reveal the real person. Seems contradictory, I know, since much of your material is your own life.
The material itself was not the strongest, but in my experience it's the comedic persona that is most important. Kathy Griffin is a good example. Even when her material is weak or just not working, her on stage presence is so strong that it makes no difference, the audience just goes right along with her.
Of course, what do I know about comedy, especially for the 18-35 crowd that probably most often goes to comedy clubs. Some of the stuff I see on the Comedy channel looks like someone on stage saying gross, disgusting or profane stuff and the crowd erupts into laughter. I don't get it. I'm no prude, you might notice this site has no Forum Guidelines against profanity, but there's nothing inherently funny about being gross, disgusting or profane. If that were the case then some of my friends would be on Leno every night. So I look at these comedians getting a laugh this way and conclude that there's something I'm just not getting. In other words, take any advice from me with a grain of salt.

Is this for real?
I found this picture while looking for a picture of something else (click for normal size):
I found the picture on these pages, but there was no explanation, it was just offered as a funny picture:
I spent a few minutes trying to track this down, but no luck. Anyone know if this is for real?

The humorous side of the Chilean mining disaster
When i began reading today's article in the Telegraph (Chile miners: drilling effort hit by unexpected delays) I thought I was just reading a summary of the technical problems involved with the rescue, and it did start out that way, but then it took an unexpected turn. Enjoy.
Tensions meanwhile are rising above ground as wives and mistresses of the 33 miners trapped deep within the San Jose mine make rival claims for compensation.
Authorities at Camp Hope have had to deal with a rush of women coming forward claiming to be first in the Chilean miners' affections in order to receive government handouts.
At least five wives have been forced to come face to face with mistresses whose existence was kept from them by their husbands, who have been trapped more than 2,300ft below since a cave-in on August 5.
One miner has four women fighting over him in an effort to claim compensation offered to the families of those facing months underground before a rescue shaft can reach them.
Government officials are considering asking the miners to name those they want to claim the benefits entitled to them in a bid to solve problems on the surface.
"There has been a lot of conflict between women," admitted Marta Flores a Red Cross worker at the makeshift camp where relatives wait for news of their loved ones.
"We had a big bust up in the canteen tent when a wife came across a woman who claimed to be her husband's lover — we had to step in and pull them apart before things got physical." At stake are welfare packages issued to the families of the trapped miners as well as future compensation claims that could run into tens of thousands of pounds.
"Unfortunately the conflict stems from money issues," said Mrs Flores. "Some of the men have children from numerous women and all of them have arrived here to stake their claim. I've met five families in this situation but I'm sure there are more.
"Some women turned up at the camp to discover that their partners already had a wife and children who they knew nothing about.
"Those that truly love their men have slipped away quietly not wanting to cause any more pain to the families but others are putting up a fight." Special welfare officers trained in marital issues have been brought in to provide help to women faced with their husband's infidelity.
One miner, who has not been named, has a first wife he never divorced, his live-in partner, a mother of a child he had several years ago, and a woman who claims to be his current girlfriend all visiting the camp.
"It's a logistical nightmare trying to keep them apart and of course they all want to send messages," said Mrs Flores.
The team of psychologists charged with ensuring the mental welfare of the men below ground are attempting keep such developments from the miners.
The men have reportedly settled into a routine where they wake up at 7.30am, have breakfast and report to the medical unit via intercom. They have a group meeting after lunch and then they read and write letters. Dinner is at 8pm and they go to sleep at 11pm.
