Re: Well You Asked......
I kinda hope we get a hung parliament (i.e no overall majority) purely to see what happens. But whilst this may be intersting it may not be the best economic positio for the country.
It might give us a chance to see what really happens if no one actually does anything much in government for 4 years, and if it makes a blind bit of difference.
Living in Scotland I'm interested to see if the conservatives can get any seats at all up here. They have done badly historically, including the last election, so in all likelihood dissatisfaction with Labour is more likely to turn to Scottish Nationalist votes up here.
Where I live is a pretty safe Labour constitutency, an area full of old mining towns, so I doubt it will make any difference who I vote for, although you can include me in on the Tory feet boiling sentiment, I'm still pissed off about School Milk!!

WK

Re: Welsh and Scots.
I think because the more rebellious and independent types in the party run for the Scottish Parliament instead nowadays. Most of them supported the government during the big backbench rebellions over controversial reforms. The healthcare reform bill that established foundation hospitals and the higher education bill that changed university fees would both have failed to pass if not for the votes of Scottish MPs. This is a ridiculous situtation, as neither reform applied to Scotland - the Scottish Parliament has repsonsibility for health and education there.
I'm too out of touch with British poitics to know the parties' current positions on it.
I believe David Cameron has said that Conservative policy would be to change things so Scottish, and possibly Welsh, MP's couldn't vote on issues that solely affected England due to devolved powers. Of course, the fact that such a situation would vastly benefit the Torys probably isn't entirely coincidental.
Labour would be the converse for the same reasons, the current situation tends to benefit them.
The SNP I believe has a policy of not voting on issues which affect only england, I don't know if it is in their manifesto though.

WK

Re: LOL Bigotgate
The "average voter" is a stupid idiot. What's even worse is that they apparently don't realize it.
Well it's a pretty established phenomenon that the majority of people think they are above average, and clearly they can't all be right, let us not forget the seminal research of Kruger and Dunning (1999) that suggests that the less competent you are the less likely you are to realise it.
What Brown did was stupid, you would think that after more than a decade in the public eye as Chancellor then Prime Minister he would have learned to be more circumspect in what he said when miked up.

Evan Harris, former senior Lib Dem MP (lost his seat this time
That's a shame, he was one of the most pro-science MPs out there.

Re: Conservative PM with a Lib Dem Deputy...
I say screw elections in future. Handbags at dawn duels for each of the leaders in turn instead. Last man standing becomes PM.
You fool! Don't you realise that was how Maggie got in?!!

Re: UK Referendum on AV
Any UK members who have actually voted?
I voted yes this morning as well, but I'm not hopeful.

Re: UK Referendum on AV
I think it is being viewed as a way to give Nick Clegg a kick in the teeth, a view that the No campaign has been happy to promulgate.
Much as I might like to give Nick Clegg a figurative kick in the teeth I'd rather not throw away possibly the only chance we'll get for a generation or more to do something about the iniquities of the current voting system. And I don't want to not vote for it just because the economy has tanked either, though I'm sure the No vote camp would be happy with that result as well.

WK
