Wud up, Drone...
Has there ever been any scientiifc research about women's apparent lack of humor?
Actually, there is some if you'll agree with Hitchens:
Forum participants, please name up to THREE of your favorite woman comedians.
I personally know of a few female stand up comics that make me laugh, but if you listen to Hitchens he makes the point clear. The women I find funny are the one's who act or say things men would say.
1) Sarah Silverman is hilarious.
2) My girl, Andi Smith. Her and I have worked together many times before. She's also cute, has a nice ass and can smoke like a dude. Love her. She's toned down a bit in this clip but she is hardcore on stage.
3) Tina Fey is aight...
That's about it for me. The others I know that are kinda funny are not well known, but there aren't many. Keep an eye out for a chick called, Wendi Starling.
Please name up to FIVE of your favorite FUNNY movies.
1) Airplane
2) History of the World
3) Bananas
4) Pet Detective
5) Old School

However, from my own observation I think that it's often the other way around. I think that they tend to laugh along with men they find physically attractive, even if they're not genuinely funny.
Fat comics get lots of women... lots. It's confidence they seek.
In my experience, good looking nerdy comics who play up that shy guy shit strike out much more than over weight, or not that attractive, comics who are confident on stage and are cocky. Women LOVE cockyness and arrogance (not overly done though).
Oh, and some blow helps too.

I though Margaret Cho was funny. What I've seen of Ellen Degeneres's stand-up was funny.
Huh... they're both gay.
Check out the Hitchens' video. That's exactly what he points out. Either gay, jewish or they act like men.
Btw, Cho is a cunt.
I love Ace Ventura Pet Detective (Liar Liar, and Me Myself and Irene were great too)
All the Austin Powers movies had me rolling.
Will Ferrels movies make me laugh a lot too, Ancorman, Talidega Nights...
Kevin Smith's are great... Dogma, Clerks (good dialog)
Adam Sandler's too... Happy Gilmore etc.
Superbad (Knocked Up and the likes too)
Napoleon Dynamite made me laugh a lot.
Remember I'm Gonna Get You Sucka?... the Wayans brothers
Half Baked was hilarious.
Niceee list. The only one's I don't like too much were Liar, Liar and Me, Myself and Irene. Carey was great in them but I don't think the films themselves were good.
And yes, I remember, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka...not many people got that movie. I thought it was hilarious!
I like the movies that have the lines that you can repeat/use in your day-to-day life.
This is my deal, too. If I can quote it, I love it.
I left out of my list, only because it was just 5, but I thought The Hangover was fucking hilarious. Zack steals that movie, and his stand up is brilliant, too.

Or when he's talking about his wolf pack I don't remember the lines...
Just because I loved that part:
quote:
Hello. How 'bout that ride in? I guess that's why they call it Sin City. [awkward laugh] You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!
Pleaseeeee tell me you've seen Zacks webisodes, Between Two Ferns? If not, my 2 fav's, althought there are about 6 of them:
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Michael Cera
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Bradley Cooper
(Note the conditions of the ferns in the two videos )

Re: But Ricky, I really want to be in the show, waaaah . . .
Damn you forum participants, I can not view videos at work because of the firewall and internet filters. In the future could you all at least write a sentence to describe why you think the video is illustrative to your point?
Sorry dude I keep forgetting that. I'll make sure, for sure, next time, lol.
I like Sarah Silverman. I obviously don't know her in person, but she seems like she MIGHT be the type who is funny but in a caustic, sarcastic way. I have known those types, but wouldn't want to date them for long.
I don't know her personally either, I smoked out with her briefly after a show a few times, but comics after shows are very toned down. Especially around each other. I'm sure she's how you described her on a date or in a relationship though.
The other two you listed aren't exactly world-class comedians.
Tina Fey? I'm pretty sure she is world-class. 30 Rock?
Ok on Andi, she's not really world-class, yet. But I personally, having seen her destroy audiences (and having lost to her at the Montreal Comedy Festival auditions) find her funny.
Looking over my thread, it appears everyone can easily name their favorite comedy movies, but is having a difficult time with the lady comedien list. Hmm.
Lastly, as a comedien, I expected from you at least one classic comedy film in your list. From before the 70s? Or from before the 50s?
I think we've finally entered into an area where you and I will disagree. Sadly, I find the humor in movies before the 70's to be rather shitty, slapstick stuff that, ehh, I don't really care for. Mel Brooks and Woody Allen are as far back as I like. That's not to say that I wouldn't watch something you recommend, I'll give it a chance. But I haven't found much I like.
Here's one that pisses off every old comic I tell, I didn't find Dr. Strangelove funny. I know, I know...but what can I tell ya.
Limiting myself to only five films was difficult for me, perhaps it was doubly-difficult for you.
Absolutely.
Here's a bit more:
1) Blazing Saddles
2) The Gods must be Crazy
3) National Lampoon's Vacation
4) The Pink Panther (the original)
5) Naked Gun

Re: Pre 70s comedy masterpieces
The Marx Brothers
Bob and Ray
Stiller and Meara
Burns and Schreiber
Burns and Carlin (yes, it's the same Burns in the last two teams)
I've only heard bits from Burns and Carlin and The Marx Bros, haven't heard the other guys. I'll check 'em out.
How bout:
1) Pryor and Wilder
2) Korman and Conway
and my all time favorite:
3) Bunker and Meathead

Look at the movie "The Sweetest Thing."
Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Selma Blair... and which one is funny again?
Sure they can act, and Applegate has been the victim of many of my sexual dreams but, that doesn't mean they're funny.
Tracy Ulmann has spent her entire life in comedy and she's neither of those caricatures either.
Ehh, ok. Ulmann is funny. Never seen her do stand up though. I don't know if she does?
Yeah she is, not to mention obnoxious. I can't stand her or Garafolo.
Early, early 80's MTV Garafolo I actually liked, but yeah as she got older she became obnoxious.
It's a real turn-off to hear political activism in the middle of a set. Nobody fucking cares what your politics are. Just make me laugh, bitch, that's your job. If I wanted political commentary I'd watch C-SPAN, thanks.
Very few can pull it off. I actually find Bill Maher not funny at all, or Dennis Miller. They come off as pretentious too. When you heard Bill Hicks rant about politics you knew he was speaking from the soul, because it was a very narrow view. Miller and Maher do hack left/right jokes that is being done at all the open mic's by new-comers.
My only criticism with Carey is that sometimes he tries so hard to be funny he ends up not being funny.
Yeah I've felt that too. I've heard he's one of those actors that has to be deeply into the project or he just does that "try to hard" thing. Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are amazing films and amazing performances from him though.
And now the Doug Song is my ringtone
That's classic.

Re: But Ricky, I really want to be in the show, waaaah . . .
That likely is truly an age thing. We old farts actually grew up with A-Bomb drills at school, and Strangelove deflated all that crap so very well. You young pups missed the release of tension the movie gave.
"You'll answer to the Coca-Cola Company for this!"
This is exactly what they do. They tell me why it should be funny or was funny, then they give me a quote from the movie. lol
I'm sure I'll be talking to a bunch of young guys in the future asking them why they didn't find Anchorman funny, then I'll say: "It's made with real bits of panther. Experts say, 60% of the time, it works everytime." And they still won't get it.

Re: Pre 70s comedy masterpieces
Bill Cosby
Robin Williams
Bob Newhart
and of course, George Carlin
Good list! Can't disagree with any. Except for maybe Robin Williams in his later years has disappointed me a bit.
I would have to split the list in 2 - one for edgy comics and one for natural performers.
Edgy comics:
1) Lenny Bruce
2) George Carlin
3) Sam Kinison
4) Richard Pryor
5) William "Bill" Hicks (as his momma liked to call him)
Natural Performers:
1) Steve Martin
2) Bill Cosby
3) Bob Newhart
4) Eddie Murphy
5) George Carlin
and why not,
Worst Comics EVER:
1) Gallagher
2) Jay Leno
3) Carrot Top (even though he's a really nice guy)
4) Pauly Shore
5) every female comic

Re: Comic Dames?
Are women still discriminated in the comedy business? Thus, all the funny ones still haven't been heard? Thus, there are still LESS women role models for young girls to be funny. If true, it at least seems to be improving.
I'm sure there's discrimination, but no more than in any other work environment. Just as there's racism, anti-semitism, anti-gay, etc.
But the reality is, everyone in comedy in some way is different than most normal, everyday people you meet. Comics are a very unique bunch in entertainment. So we all face some sort of personal obstacle.
Black people faced harsh racism, discrimination, type-casting, etc., yet some of the funniest comics are black, males of course. Eddie Murphy, Pryor, Chris Rock, all over came that. Why? Because they're funny. Women, for the most part, are not. And the exceptions (like Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Andi Smith) are just good. They are funny. That's all it takes.
Women are attractive, that's how they get men to have sex with them. Men on the other hand are usually not very attractive, we had to come up with ways to attract females. Funny seemed to do it; funny guys get laid. If you're a guy and you're not funny, chances are you'll be very unsuccessful with women. However, if you're a woman and you're unattractive, chances are you won't be very successful with men.
Women need to be attractive, men need to be funny.
The only two excepts are money and coke...with that, anyone will fuck you.

Re: Comic Dames?
This may shock you, but for heterosexual women, men are attractive to look at.
Obviously... but it's important to note what exactly they're attracted too. They're not "attractive" men as in the borderline-gay Calvin Klien models or these vampire douchebags (unless they're 14 years old) - that is not attractive to most women, yet this is what is socially considered "attractive." Most women I know don't like going to male stripclubs, and if they do it's more of a party or an occasion. However.....dudes on the other hand LOVE stripclubs. We go on a random Tuesday just to stare at naked women.
Women who are physically attracted to men do so for deeper reasons than a pretty face. And if it's because of the body, then there is a genetic reason why women are attracted to men who are physically fit.
None of my male friends have relationships with humourless, boring women, however attractive.
Jeez you need more male friends. MOST of my friend"s women are boring and annoying as fuck! Seriously, I'm not trying to be funny at all. I can stand to be around very few of them.
They might have slept with some, but the women they fall in love with and settle down with are the ones with whom they can relax, laugh, be themselves.
There wouldn't be that many divorces if things were that peachy.

Re: Pre 70s comedy masterpieces
That's enough, I'm sure you're ready to burst a vein already.
Dude, no Lenny, no Hicks...you don't like Ferrell, Sandler, Hartman and Lovitz. Yeah, I'm ready to burst! Lol
I recently met and worked with Lovitz, first time ever and, ehh, I actually enjoyed it. At the end of his set he does a 10 min closing song tribute to Bob Saget being gay, which he's not though. Lovitz surprisingly has an amazing singing voice, if you get a chance I recommend watching his act.
And, maybe the "Pee Wee" character was annoying, I was young so I actually enjoyed it, but Paul Reuben is a great actor...remember Blow with him and Johnny Depp? Reuben's did a great job.

- It's funny, I've been out with my married friends or friends in relationships and "some how" we'll end up at a stripclub, and I've had friends literally jump up in a moment of clarity and say, "Dude, it's fuckin' Tuesday, wtf are we doing in a stripclub?" And honestly I have never had a good answer to that other than, "Well, naked bitches, dude."
Guys put up with their mate's (in the British as opposed to sexual sense of the word) girlfriends. But on the whole men are more fun without their "partners" around and the girlfriends are kinda a drag. Generically speaking.
It seems like this is, for the most part, the case. I've had ONE and only one woman in my life that truly did know how to hang out and drink with my friends like "one of the guys." But even then, I didn't want her around a lot only because, even though she could hang out and be herself around guys in a cool manner, I couldn't completely be myself when she was around. I personally couldn't be "one of the guys."
If marriage depended on that kinda peachiness there would be a lot more divorce. Guys just accept the inevitable to a large degree.
Fuck, who needs a shot and beer?

Re: Comic Dames?
Do your friends find their women boring and annoying as fuck too, but don't leave them for whatever reason?
ALL men find women annoying and boring, that's why we have male friends. You guys (at this point from our convo I'm assuming your a female - if I'm wrong, sorry.) can be good partners, lovers, best friend - that's all well and good - but fun, funny or as fun to hang out with as our male friends? Hellllz-to-the-NO! Any guy saying anything different is a liar!
Do they know that you don't like their women?
They don't like their own women, of course they know I don't like 'em. If they can't put up with them they certainly don't expect me to put up with them.
Seriously though, most of them on a personal level I love 'em. Some are like a sister to me. But my sister was annoying and boring ass fuck too. Still love her though.
Guys enjoy a women on a whole other level. You guys are boring and annoying to us. Sorry, but it's just a fact.
I really like all my boyfriend's friends, and he likes mine too.
Cool. But he still finds your female friends boring and annoying, trust me.

Re: Pre 70s comedy masterpieces
As far as I can tell, each of them is a one trick pony.
Well I guess I'm viewing more of the 'total package' with these guys. Sandler and Ferrell and also great writters, directors, and sketch performers. As far as SNL goes, I'd put Ferrell in the top 10 as far as sketch/improv.
Sandler and Ferrell have also done amazing rolls in much more serious films (Sandler: Punch Drunk Love and Reign 'or Me, also Spanglish) - (Ferrell: Stranger Than Fiction, Melinda and Melinda and Winter Passing - which is a great film: movie trailer.
As for Lovitz and Hartman, you kinda gotta "get" improv and sketch groups to understand these guys. It's a vital roll in any improv troup to have guys like Hartman and Lovitz you play those odd yet straight characters.
Never saw Blow. Did Pee Wee do something different in any way from Pee Wee?
Tons! Here.
Also, lets remember that Pee Wee was a franchise, he produced, directed and controlled the entire production. That takes some talent to do. It did type-cast him for other roles though.
