Hi Bluejay
Perhaps I should amend it and say, "...while the ball is in the goal box." I was referring to the penalty area, but the term escaped me at the moment I was writing the post.
The problem with that is it complicates the rules. As it stands, offside is dictated by where the players are when the ball is kicked forward.
If you have another rule that in certain circumstances it depends on where the ball is, rather than where the players are, you then have 2 different types of offside, and more complicated rules.
And presumably the idea behind what you're saying is that it will help players inside the penalty area to shoot for goal without being offside, so it's still really down to where the players are as much as where the ball is.

This isn't really what I meant.
While playing the ball into the penalty area, the usual offside rule would apply. But, once the ball is inside the penalty area, offsides will not be called on additional passes or deflections.
It seems that the line judges make a lot of mistakes calling offsides when everyone's congested inside the penalty area. It also seems that this would make it easier to turn a trip into the penalty area into a goal, which would increase the scoring as per Americans' wishes.
And, yeah, it makes the rules a little more complicated, but we are talking about Americanizing the sport, and this doesn't even approach the complexity of most American sports' rulebooks.

Of course, it's your call, just trying to help.
Whether or not it works, no doubt we'd buy back the whole revised concept of the game for a ridiculous price.

I bet there'd be more scoring, and it would be more fun to watch.

But who would want to watch a game that is all about people chasing a bouncing ball and making virtually unstoppable breaks to score every minute or so.
Oh wait, that's basket ball....

No, that is your errant conception of basketball.
In real basketball it's more like every 30-45 seconds.

Now, if you could make body checks in basket ball; now that would be fun to watch!

We could make the ball oblong, put pads on the guys, move it to a big field ...
Sorry Larni. I'm having withdrawal symptoms again.
God, I can't wait for August.

I understood what you meant, but I think it would compromise the tactics more than you think. It encourages a place man to essentially go and sit in the area waiting. All the rest of the team have to manage then is to get the ball to the edge of the area and knock it through to him. If the defense try to mark him at all, they can't play anyone else offside further up the pitch.
Still, if the intent is to Americanise, I suppose a sport where the ball just bounces in and out of each goal with grinding monotony would be appropiate.

Two-Pointers!
Hi, Caffeine.

I guess I forgot that you don't get called offsides if you don't touch the ball. So, maybe it would need another extra rule then, making offsides more complicated than it already is.
Maybe the hockey-style offsides isn't such a bad idea, after all.
But, by the time the offense gets the ball into the area, the defense should be there already, though, so my idea seems like it would only make a major difference on breakaway counterattacks. Other than that, it should only give a slim advantage to the offense.

Or, they could give two points for long-distance goals.

I still like that one too. In this case the ball has to be the first thing across the line of demarcation. This would prevent offensive players from standing next to the goal.

[Checking] would just make soccer stupid.
I will concede on this one. Fouls are not called often enough to break the flow of the game. This is one of the things I hate about basketball, the flow of the game is interrupted way too much.
Why restrict it to stoppages? Why not just have substitutions on the fly?
Throwing a bone to tradition, I guess. Also, on-the-fly substutitions could be abused for field position.

Hi, Tram.
It takes real guts to be that lame on a public forum.
