Self-Comforting
Are you talking about this arm-cross?
Besides self-comforting or if one is chilly, there is also the times when the wardrobe may not be functioning well. Crossed arms help keep everything in place.
Sometimes it is due to being self conscious of ones shape or the spot the kid just left on one's shirt.
Sometimes we just don't know what to do with our hands. Our pants don't always have pockets. When I don't have pockets I tend to cross my arms.
Sometimes my purse starts to annoy my shoulder and I cross my arms to change the stress point (usually when I don't have pockets).
Those are just a few things I thought of as I walked through the kitchen with my arms crossed.

I suppose, deep down, I'd always suspected that was the answer. I just couldn't bring myself to accept it.
Now you have to figure out why you annoy women.

Teenagers

I did wonder if it might be a posture derived from a cradling instinct. It's a posture I think I see most commonly in younger women and teenagers.
Sometimes teen girls are self conscious of emerging breasts or lack there of.
Do you notice it more in skinny women as opposed to not so skinny women? Sometimes it is hard for larger women to comfortably cross their arms in that fashion. When I was heavier, I didn't cross them much. Not comfortable.

Re: Teenagers
Yes, I do notice it on taller teens and women also.
There is also the protective aspect sometimes. Get into a crowd with a lot of elbows and ow. Protect the chest. It may be a natural defense for the chest area.

When I was in high school, back in the Neolithic Age, girls used to carry their books cradled in both arms like a baby and boys carried theirs in one hand at their sides like a spear. (Not my imagery. I read about it somewhere.)
I don't know if they still do that (or even if they still use books) but I suppose it's a related phenomenon.
Yep, I remember that. It felt strange carrying books down to one side with one hand. (Had to try). Always wondered about that difference.
Of course, one couldn't sneak up behind a girl and push the books out of her hand as you could the way the boys carried them.
Maybe it does deal with instincts. Very interesting.
