now i am thinking that the right to free religion does not include constructing buildings and such can be barred by the government if they so choose without worry. regardless of the precedent of previously constructive religious structures. On what grounds, then, would the government have for not allowing a run down old Burlington Coat Factory to be turned into a religious center that is blocks away from ground zero?

If the City of New York denies the zoning approval sought for this site, it will blatantly violate [the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act] and expose the city to one whopping lawsuit that is extremely likely to succeed, as Chicago attorney Dan Lauber [4] told Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet. "A federal law adopted by a Republican Congress makes the denial the Republicans seek blatantly illegal." Source New York Mayor Bloomberg writes: The attack was an act of war and our first responders defended not only our city but also our country and our Constitution, he said, becoming slightly choked up at one point in his speech, which he delivered on Governors Island. We do not honor their lives by denying the very constitutional rights they died protecting. We honor their lives by defending those rights and the freedoms the terrorists attacked. Source

Your dumbfuckery knows no bounds, does it? Where does it say Mayor Bloomberg declared it an act of war? You do realize he wasn't even mayor at the time of the attack, right?

What ARE the protestors protesting about?
I saw a video yesterday about the protest. A black guy walked through the crowd and was harrased because they thought he was a muslim. He wasn't. He was apparently just a contractor. He was wearing a do-rag, so they must have mistaken it for a Taqiyah. I am at work and since Youtube is blocked, I am unable to link to it. Are they really just protesting the "sanctity" of the site? I mean, the whole crowd started screaming at this guy....

Re: What ARE the protestors protesting about?
For many of the protesters, yeah. It just doesn't seem that way to me. I would say some, yes. But given the way they reacted to someone who appeared to be muslim and (most likely) the propensity of a majority of the protestors to ALSO be fans of Faux News, I would say that some may be protesting for the sanctity of the site and most are protesting what is being built. Yes, I am stereotyping here. Though A LOT of the signage I have seen in the rallies are of an anti-Islamic nature. See the video Huntard linked to. Notice the "Sharia" sign?

In reference to the naming of the Center......
I had just realized that a number of people had been referring to this as "The Cordoba House". As I was listening to NPR on my way home from work, a caller called in saying that that is what was being protested (given that the nature of the name is denoting "conquest" in some fashion). So I decided to look it up for myself. It turns out, early this month the developers decided to name it Park51 instead.

Re: Listen
In the Koran it clearly states that a Muslim must kill those that will not follow. There is a big difference. You ever actually read the bible? Deuteronomy 17:12 Exodus 22:19 Deuteronomy 13:13-19 Deuteronomy 13:7-12 Leviticus 24:10-16 Romans 1:24-32 {ABE} Wow, I edited out my "that's the old testament" remark before fully reading your post.
No where does it say that you should stone a child. That's OT shit. Sorry bud, you either accept it all or accept none of it. Without the OT, jesus is pixie dust. Edited by hooah212002, : No reason given. Edited by hooah212002, : No reason given.

Re: Listen
All of those passages, which are from the christian bible, instruct followers to kill non-believers. Maybe you should read the book.

Re: Listen
It's simple, really. Is the OT necessary for christianity or not? Can you have christianity without it? My point is: there is a book that people look to for guidance and find meaning in. If they find a particular passage that suits what they feel, they are justified in carrying out those actions because they have scripture (mere words in a book) to back them up. You cannot deny that those words are indeed there.
Jesus was the completion of the law. Not that I care right now to get into a discussion about what the bible means, but I am pretty sure jesus did not come to change the law of the OT. But you see, anyone can interpret the words of the bible however they want and there is no way YOU can tell me I am wrong just because it's not what you want to hear.
