Dr Adequate writes:It always made me deeply uncomfortable when the pastor, leading the congregation in prayer, would say something like: "... and we thank Thee that Thou hast delivered us from the heresy of quintipunctalism, and led us in the true doctrine of periscopy". Because then he's only pretending to speak to God --- he's actually adressing his congregation, usually on the same subject that he preached his sermon on.
In fact, that is covered in matt 6:5 and following
6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
One of the problems with modern Christianity, is that much of it is contrary to the teachings of Jesus.
