This topic is the revival of sorts of the past "General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures" topic series. Links to that series, from first to last topic, are:

Change in Moderation?
General discussion of moderation procedures
General discussion of moderation procedures: The Sequel
General discussion of moderation procedures: The Consecution
General discussion of moderation procedures: The Consequtive Consecution
General discussion of moderation procedures: The Consequtive Consecution Sequel
General discussion of moderation procedures - Part 7
General discussion of moderation procedures - Part 8
General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures 9.0
General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures 10.0
General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures 11.0
General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures 12.0
General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures 13.0

I thought there was at least one more topic in that series, but I've been unable to track it down. There's also a variety of other major and minor topics concerning moderation procedures. Search through the Suggestions and Questions forum index to find them.

Note that this topic is in the "Free For All" forum. The difference between those above cited topics and this new one is that the various admins are under no obligation in any way to respond to or otherwise act upon the member messages. Admin (aka Percy) has stated elsewhere - "Members should understand that nothing official can emerge from a thread in FFA."

The Report Discussion Problems Here 3.0 topic is still the place to report perceived discussion problems. And that topic is still NOT the place to discuss moderation procedures - This new topic is the place for such discussion.

Please keep messages on-topic, relevant to moderation procedure issues. If this topic turns into a big stinking garbage pile, I suspect it will be closed without there being any successor topic.

Very few problems with moderation.

Exceptions:

--Sometimes mods are a bit quick, or unsubtle, on the off-topic and ban buttons.

--Frequent threats of banning are very off-putting.

seconded.

this isn't english school. it's not like arach's posts are unreadable, they're just missing a few caps.

way, way out of line.

Re: why the fuck should arach be suspended for not using fucking capitals????
Mainly, because it's easier to distinguish between sentences when people do use capitals.

Yeah, 'cos those Germans are all so incapacitated by their written language...

I didn't know that the Germans had stopped capitalizing at the beginnings of sentences. When was that?

Re: why the fuck should arach be suspended for not using fucking capitals????
i agree, it is better for posters to use proper capitalisation and, more generally, correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

i do not agree that a poster should be banned for not using fucking capitals when their posts are perfectly readable just the same. it is not like arach is posting unreadable gibberish.

They haven't. But as you're obviously ignorant of the German written language, let me inform you. They capitalise every noun, proper or not. This means that capital letters are so widespread through their sentences that they play next to no role as markers of the beginning of sentences.

I know.

This means that capital letters are so widespread through their sentences that they play next to no role as markers of the beginning of sentences.

Really? You should inform them of this, then they could do away with the convention of capitalizing at the beginnings of sentences the next time they do one of their famous language updates by decree.

So, from all this, you seem to have come to the conclusion that capitalizing at the beginnings of sentences in English doesn't help readers of English to distinguish between sentences.

Is that sound reasoning?

No, not at all - why should it be no help?

Right. So why can't moderators issue the occasional warning and, if necessary, short suspension to any of us if we're dragging down EvC's generally good standard?

Mr. Jack writes:

Certainly, to all that. But all that happened was that he was suspended for a very short period after a warning. Not banned.

If you're thinking that there might be a couple of other candidates (think "gibberish") around who could have been used as examples ahead of Arach, I wouldn't disagree.

My original point was that it is a help, and I got the impression that you might be debating that point. If you're not, good.

As it's easy for the post-writer to do, and it's reasonable to assume that readers of any given post far outnumber the writer, I think it makes sense for the easy readability of the board that we all do it.
