The suspension message etc.
From Suspensions and Bannings Part III, Message 221:

The "little red dot" suspension message:

Her first topic was spammish but relevant to this forums interests. Now there is a second similar topic. And now she has a banner graphic signature, promoting and linking to the second topics video. Things are just getting too spammy. 24 hr suspension - Time for the various admins to evaluate these topics legitimacy (OSLT) - Adminnemooseus

Adminnemooseus

Added by edit: I've now zapped all those spammy signatures, and the shut signature off. Any discussion of this suspension and other actions should to to General Discussion Of Moderation Procedures (aka 'The Whine List').

The first sentence of her first message:

http://www.theprinciplemovie.com/

I could have permanently suspended her and exiled the topic to the hidden "Spam Topics" forum right at that point.

But I thought "Even though the topic is spammy, it is a subject related to the interests of this forum". Perhaps I should have put that comment into the approval message, or perhaps into a pre-approval reply. Regardless, I promoted the topic. And I was rather supportive to her efforts (see here).

But Then I saw that she now had a banner ad, complete with link, as her signature (alas I didn't save a copy). This really crossed the line into "signature spammer" (getting your link exposure to enhance the search engine ranking).

But I guess I pretty much said all the in the above quoted suspension message.

Or something like that.

Even when they break forum rules, ignore moderator requests, and show no signs whatsoever of wanting an actual discussion?

Percy suggests that we warn then act. I had warned her and was hoping she would slowly improve. i was prepared to give her awhile...and i was not planning on promoting more (of her)topics....but alas...she didn't really want a discussion.

She wanted to promote---"to help (something) happen, develop, or increase" ---namely that website she showed us. I asked her what was in it for her and she left without responding.

Dont you see the importance of giving people a chance, however?

Yes, give people a chance.

When they propose such a broad topic ask them to narrow he focus. Percy does that a lot.

Moose, you know better
You provide no indication as to what you think is in need of more reference.

And I posted the reference to the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.

So what on earth are you talking about?

Methyl mercury vs. ethyl mercury? Both you and Faith have something to say about this with you providing most of the facts and Faith just allusions to the movie without any hard facts. Perhaps some cites to the scientific literature on this topic.

NoNukes responds to me:

Methyl mercury vs. ethyl mercury?

This is basic biochemistry. Who doesn't know that different chemicals behave differently? Since Faith is the one quite literally screaming "MERCURY" and following up with a reference that confuses methyl mercury, mercury (I) chloride, and mercuric nitrate for ethyl mercury, isn't she the one who is supposed to be providing the justification?

Do I really need to derive the Second Law of Thermodynamics from first principles or can we just assume basic knowledge? Shouldn't someone who is entering into a discussion about this have done their homework first?

This is not obscure information.

quote:
Perhaps some cites to the scientific literature on this topic.

And when has Faith ever paid attention to the literature? Do you really think that she will pay attention to:

J Appl Toxicol. 2013 Aug;33(8):700-11. doi: 10.1002/jat.2855. Epub 2013 Feb 11.
Toxicity of ethylmercury (and Thimerosal): a comparison with methylmercury.
Drea JG, Farina M, Rocha JB.

"Although methylmercury (meHg) is considered a hazardous substance that is to be avoided even at small levels when consumed in foods such as seafood and rice (in Asia), the World Health Organization considers small doses of thimerosal safe regardless of multiple/repetitive exposures to vaccines that are predominantly taken during pregnancy or infancy."

Toxicol Sci. 2011 Apr;120(2):499-506. doi: 10.1093/toxsci/kfr009. Epub 2011 Jan 20.
Toxicokinetics of mercury after long-term repeated exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccine.
Barregard L, Rekić D, Horvat M, Elmberg L, Lundh T, Zachrisson O.

"The results indicate that mercury from thimerosal is not accumulated in blood in adults. This is in accordance with short half-lives and rapid metabolism of EtHg to inorganic mercury."

Pediatrics. 2008 Feb;121(2):e208-14. doi: 10.1542/peds.2006-3363.
Mercury levels in newborns and infants after receipt of thimerosal-containing vaccines.
Pichichero ME, Gentile A, Giglio N, Umido V, Clarkson T, Cernichiari E, Zareba G, Gotelli C, Gotelli M, Yan L, Treanor J.

"CONCLUSIONS: The blood half-life of intramuscular ethyl mercury from thimerosal in vaccines in infants is substantially shorter than that of oral methyl mercury in adults. Increased mercury levels were detected in stools after vaccination, suggesting that the gastrointestinal tract is involved in ethyl mercury elimination. Because of the differing pharmacokinetics of ethyl and methyl mercury, exposure guidelines based on oral methyl mercury in adults may not be accurate for risk assessments in children who receive thimerosal-containing vaccines."

Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science
Interpreting Mercury in Blood and Urine of Individual Patients
Kern L. Nuttall
Accepted 19 May 2004

"Sodium ethylmercury thiosalicylate (proprietary names include thimerosal, thiomersal, methiolate sodium, and merthiolate) is a water-soluble compound used as a preservative [38]. It is added to many commercial products of human plasma, immunoglobulins, and vaccines, usually to a final concentration about 10 mg/L. Toxicity is generally low, although allergic reactions occur, and symptomatic and fatal poisonings have been reported.

"Thimerosal rapidly breaks down in the body to release the ethylmercury ion (CH3CH2-Hg+). Ethylmercury appears to be less toxic than methyl-mercury in part because metabolism is more rapid [38]. The blood half-life in adults is about 18 days. Low dose ethylmercury derived from thimerosal in vaccines had a blood half-life of 7 days (95% CI 410) in 40 full-term infants."

Or will she just claim it's all a conspiracy?

Thimerosal is ethyl mercury. It is not metabolized the same as methyl mercury. It is not toxic at the doses give in vaccines and is rapidly metabolized and eliminated from the body (in infants, quite rapidly).

But she's the one making the claim. She's the one who needs to justify her claim.

Apparently as least some of your references were published online. Being that this is an online forum, is it asking too much that you give links to the online versions???

But she's the one making the claim. She's the one who needs to justify her claim.

You were also making your own claims, without supplying reference(s).

Look, even if one is not doubting the accuracy of your information, one might still be interested in looking at the source material that backs up your information.

Not every last detail calls for a reference. But if it is a major point on your part (as this was), it does call for a reference. If you tap an online source for your information, give us a link to that source.

revisit Rocky.C versus evolution science: what is his best argument?
I get the feeling that Rocky.C does not want to start a topic yet, so I would like to see Rocky.C versus evolution science: what is his best argument? reopened -- with the caveat that he pick which *one* (1) of his arguments is most telling:

  1. Cosmic Evolution:

  2. Stellar & Planetary Evolution:

  3. Chemical Evolution:

  4. Organic Evolution:

  5. Macro Evolution:

  6. Micro Evolution:

  7. New information into the gene pool.

OR let us start with 7 and work backwards -- because he did not chose his *best* argument ... in spite of several requests to do so.

Enjoy

From the "Report Discussion Problems Here 4.0" topic
From Message 385

quote:
{Non-topic material hidden - Adminnemooseus}

A cheer for the invisible unicorn. Which, to my mind, was both a witty and appropriate response to Faith. I don't see how making that point in that way (maybe too subtle? But that's the intellectual charm) could be considered violating forum rules. I'm sure she saw, and appreciated, both the humor and the point even in disagreement. She's a big girl and has the grit and the sense of humor. Both of which marc appears to lack.

While we (Minnemooseus et all) of the evolution side do find creationism (and especially YEC) to be silly, repeatedly replying with such things as the "almost fell off my unicorn" graphic is no way to carry on a debate. Coyote could also back off on using his collection of favorite Heinlein quotations as replies.

Replies welcome. This topic is the place, not at the "Report Discussion Problems Here 4.0" topic.

At some point all you can do is laugh.

Then you need to keep your laughter to yourself, and not post it as messages. I know I do such (although it's probably more a sigh or a groan), as probably do many other members here.
