I am for one enjoying the banter this thread has stirred.
My comments are that I have to agree the US spends to much money on the military. For better or worse it is the ebb and flow of the US form of government and 2 party system that has sustained our dynamic country all this time. It does seem however the middle of the politcal bell curve is shifting futher and further to the right and so what was once considered right wing conservative is unable to pass a Republican purity test. Hence more moderate politicians being squeezed to the right. Nuclear power plants I feel is a bad idea. From what I know about them, they are expensive poisonous hot water heaters that will add to our problems in the form of keeping up the maintainance and doing away with the waste.Electric cars are a good idea, except the power that churns them is from most likely fossil fuels. I think solar and wind and wave technology makes good sense if the infrastructure and investment in this technolgy can ever become profitable. Once something is profitable it will be embraced. Which is why corporations embrace war and why such a large slice of pie goes to this end. Who is paying for the American wars and who is profiting? Must there always be a perpetual war between Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia? What this world is witnessing is a tremedous change. Look at the middle east. Wow! But in the face of change is the old guard and fundalmentalist clinging ever harder to the old ways. Why change it if is is not broke? Because it is broke, and we are broke . Americans are willing to pay a athlete tens of millions to play a sport. But will balk at paying his taxes.

Hi Rahvin,
Rahvin writes: Nuclear power is by far the cheapest method of power generation, and modern reactors are extremely safe. According to a article in the Wall Street Journal Nuclear Power is considered to expensive and dangerous. All the "pro" points seem to be based on conjecture. The Case For and Against Nuclear Power - WSJ I admit I do not know anything about it but what I read in the media. But from what I read it is not the way to go imo. The sad thing being it may be our only viable option.Green peace has produced a article about Frances nuclear plants. That considering the source is of course bias. But it is referenced. As far as" a coal plant releasing more radiation" is concerned, heh, tell the to the residents at Chernobyl. Oh my bad, they're all dead from radiation poisoning. The thing is the rest of the world is doing it. So it will be a matter of time before our country follows. What good is it if you are the only kid in the pool who is not dropping a turd in the water. The pool is still full of shit. http://www.nirs.org/nukerelapse/background/frenchnf2008.pdf

Ok so my sources are apologist and filled with inaccuracies and I am a idiot. Nice chat. Way to spurn discussion. I did not dispute nuke plants as a option. I also admitted the bias in the green peace article. But if Nuclear power was the golden answer we would have zillions of them by now. Our current situation of using hydrocarbons turned out what? Clean and safe eh? But Hey I like driving and heating my home.
I said Nuclear plants are expensive and dangerous. You say they are cheap and safe. Who is being a naive idiot? And as far as greenpeace goes, fulmanating at the mouth about the source because it conflict with your views is silly. You did not even read the article did you? I stand by original statement that nuclear power plants are both dangerous and expensive hot water heaters. If you have data or articles that show how safe and cheap they are feel free to post them. I will at least read them. Otherwise your opinion is of no more value than greenpeaces.

Dr. Adequate writes: I agree. Sad that using radioactive material that produces even more radioactive material that is caustic and poisonous for thousands of years, is our last viable option. We have no choice. The rest of the world is going there and we must too. Sadly today we now know the tremedous cost of human folly on our environment and ourselves for the sake of our appetite for energy. And the stupidity of believing any corporation or company that makes money off of such industries as being safe and cheap and good for everyone. The tree hugging environmentalist decades ago are being vindicated at the same time a whole new generation of people are being told we are being naive and having irrational fears.
I don't say that nuclear power is a silver bullet for all our energy problems, but it's certainly worth thinking about.

Dr.Adequate writes: And all this time I thought it was Extraterrestrial Aliens.
..they aren't because I believe that radioactive waste can creep up on me and rape me while I sleep. Yeah, I wish that nuclear reactors didn't produce nuclear waste, but really how paranoid about it should we be?
Ever hear the phrase, "I'm from the Government, I'm here to help." Seriously though, everyone here has a point. We know it is a reality we must live with. But hundreds or even thousands of nuclear plants dotting the country gives me cause for concern. A handful of plants nah, but think of all the idiots out there with the potiential on some level to fuck something up. Be it at a plant, or storage, or transport level. Think of all that waste. Think of the human factor. Now whos being paranoid?

=Dr. AdequateHow much time do you spend being concerned about the radioactive isotopes and carcinogens you breathe that are emitted as the result of burning coal? Thanks for that.Probably about as much time as I spend worrying about the ravages of same said byprods from smoking marijuana. I just said nuclear power plants where expensive and not safe. And that wind/solar and wave technology is cleaner. You know your typical tree hugging hippy shit. I do grok what everyone is saying though.

Hello Rahvin,
Rahvin writes:
No I was not aware of the environmental harm caused by making semiconductors. But I can almost guess they are being made in China lol. I know, I know thats not the point. But your NIMBY comment earlier was spot on. Have a great week end.
Are you aware of the environmental harm caused by the manufacture of semiconductors, particularly large semiconductors like solar power cells on the scale of commercial power production?
