Well the US hasn't yet got a real bread and circus economy, those democracies that have properly achieved it - such as the Scandanavian economies where both taxation and benefits are very high - are the most contented people on the planet.
Maybe when you lose your hyper-aggressive stance to the disadvantaged and slow down the self-advancement of the hyper rich, the US people will achieve their stated ambition to be happy.
