Re: Linux...
Hi fearandloathing,
I converted to linux 10 with a dual boot setup with windoz XP. I need the XP for a number of programs associated with work, so I use that side for my "work" laptop and the ubuntu side as my "personal" laptop.
I also backup all data files and software installation files onto thumb drives, so that I can afford to completely rebuild at any time.
I also have linux puppy on a flash drive - it loads into ram and is the fastest boot of the three. This allows me to carry "my computer" in my pocket and boot it up on any machine that allows boot from USB drive.
Enjoy.

So..
So one of my laptops, 5 months old, running Windows 7, for the most part it did nothing but act as a Minecraft server) started acting up earlier today. I would boot up, i would login, and minute or so would pass and then it just freezed up. I shut it down, used another laptop for the day, but then, i booted up an hour or so ago...
It started trying to boot via the DVD drive, then through PXE...
NTFS had fucked up. Corrupted my partitions. According the the BIOS there was no disk.
I might be able to fix this, using either Linux or BSD..

I recently installed Ubuntu on a friends system, and also on mine running beside windows.
Does anyone else have any experience with Ubuntu that might be helpful, I would appreciate any feed back.
So far it seems faster than windows 7 on my machine, and seems to have given extended life to my friends 8 year old machine which was running xp pro, the only problem I have had was with Google earth. I couldn't load it from Google earth website, but found an other source for it.
I started using linux in the days when installing a linux OS meant inserting in a dozen command lines. This was even before the days of window x. Heck, I remember some of these distros asked you to input the specific model number of your peripherals. How annoying...
I must say, linux distros nowadays have come a long way.
That said, the linux community has some of the worst 1337s I have ever seen in my life. You ask them a genuine question and they will tell you how stupid you are for asking that question. For instance, for someone who's a total linux illiterate, if there's no exe file to double click on then he is lost. And again, I'm referring to the old days before synaptic was on the scene. Every package had to be installed manually.
My recommendation nowadays for non-techy is to stay the hell away from linux. Until the 1337s realize they need to grow up, I'm not recommending anything else.

Good luck with that, bud. It is one of the most user unfriendly os's out there.

It might have a very steep learning curve, but its a great OS, once you become familiar with it.

The X Window System pre-dates Linux creation by a handful of years. I presume that you mean prior to X Window on Linux.

It's not quite so bad these days. You can find answers to most of your questions on the web without bothering the 1337s.

Puppy Linux
Playing with lucid puppy, for a small OS it seems to work well with most things I do on the net.
