That's pretty much the line used by every (bad) politician everywhwere, every time. How about "He's going to raise your taxes, and drive the country deeper in debt, and he'll be the ruin of us all?" Locally, we recently had a referendum on building a new water treatment plant. The opposing sides advertised (basically):
If you want lower taxes and lower utility rates, vote Yes. If you want lower taxes and lower utility rates, vote No. I vote for the guy who says he's going to raise taxes. Edited by ringo, : Spellng.

"Wholly" might not be the best word there, Mr. Linguist. How about "profoundly"? Or "endemically"?
All you folks insisting that the Tea Party is a wholly racist movement are acting like creationists.

I tried to make a similar distinction in another thread - that fascists may not necessarily be bullies even if they do tend to attract bullies. Subtlty often doesn't fly very high at EvC. The tar brush is wide.
I think there is an important distinction between an organization that is racist, as opposed to an organization that contains or indeed even attracts racists.

One of the problems I have with you lefties is that the wonderful things that you tell me that your policies are going to result in don't actually happen to me in real life.

Actually, it's more like providing a subsidized bus service for people who can't afford cars - and encouraging people to use the bus service by restricting single-occupant vehicles, etc. It's funny that you You don't force people off the bus and into buying a car because the automotive market can't support the dealers without more people driving.

You don't have to look very hard. Try anywhere in the civilized world for a start. If you have to set up a racket to save the bus company, then maybe its time to look for a mode of transportation that actually works and can sustain itself. Fining people for non-compliance may or may not be going too far. It seems to be in the same category as fining people for not wearing seatbelts.

But yeah, I think if we were dealing with a country that had half of our population, and they all lived in an area the size of Montana, then it would be easier to lower the cost of healthcare. Too, if you spread all those Japanese people out over 26 times the square miles (size of US vs. size of Japan), then I think their healthcare costs would go up.

Right. So your notion that universal medicare only works in geographically small nations with dense populations is nonsense. It sorta almost works here too. You guys have a tenth of our population and 75% of you live within 100 miles of our border. There doesn't seem to be any reason why it wouldn't work in the US. The reason you don't have it seems to be because you're doctrinaire idiots.

I don't consider smoking crack to be behaving badly. If he behaved badly while under the influence - e.g. harassing women, etc. - than that bad behaviour should be considered on its own demerits.
But if your salary (I'm guessing a reasonably large one) comes out of every resident's pocket; and you are in a position of leadership and authority; then I think that part of your job spec is to behave fairly well - you're representing these people.

A social system without healthy citizens/workers is doomed to fail. Otherwise, it is clear that any social system that takes away individual initiative is doomed to fail. Publicly funded healthcare is no different from publicly funded roads. Both are necessary for a modern society, not necessacrily a "statist" one.

I'm glad to see the Supreme Court make errors. An infallible court would be a dangerous thing. SCOTUS may go along with such a scheme, in error as we have seen the court do many times. Then 30, 50, 100 years from now the court will see its error and overturn the precedent as we have also seen the court do many times. And I'm glad to see those errors corrected.

To recycle a joke from another thread, that's only because canines don't live to voting age. That's because canines, like corporations, cannot be citizens. (Maybe corporations should be able to vote after eighteen years in business - one corporation, one vote.)

I dunno. It might be an improvement.
Dogs, dears though they are, lack the necessary rigor: if they could vote, they'd simply vote for dinner. The last thing we need is another party of biscuits and balls.
