AAAAAaaaaRRRggHHH!!!
Various newspapers in Europe (Bild in Germany, El Pais in Spain, Le Monde in France and the Guardian in the UK) have recently suggested that the Republican nomination race is turning into a caricature of a parody (my spin based on reading some translations rather than a direct quote of any kind). The basis of this view seems to be that the sort of views being espoused in the Republican nomination TV dabates would be considered lunatic fringe nutjobbery in any other developed Western economy.
Is this true?
If so - How the hell did America end up in this situation. It's a great country with some fantastic achievements. How the hell did a situation where the lunatics are in serious danger of taking over the asylum come about?
What the fuck are you guys up to over there?

Re: AAAAAaaaaRRRggHHH!!!
An interesting post...
But:
Perdition writes:
I don't envy the nominees their job, but I seriously see, within 20 years, the Republican Party fracturing into four or five smaller parties. And I can see the Democrats following suit.
Most democracies that don't run some form of proportional representation seem to end up with effectively a two party system. One party vaguely more wealth redistrubutive and one less wealth redistrubutive than the other. With exactly what constitutes the "middle ground" of wealth distribution policies shifting from nation to nation and era to era.
But the US seems to be in a particular right wing frenzy at the moment. The "middle ground" seems more to the right than anywhere else in the developed world. And the two party system seems to be moving ever "rightwards".
And I'm not convinced that your multi-party prediction has a historical precedent.

This is actually a positive for a Republican candidate these days. Sad, but true. Republicans have made a career on villifying European democracies to the point that they can't go any further to the right than nutjobbery. They idolize Ronald Reagan, but Reagan would be way, way too liberal to run in this primary. Afterall, Reagan actually increased taxes during a recession.
All of this adds to my point. How the hell did America end up in a position where many of it's leading politicians are fucking insane by any international measure?
Without any sarcasm I can say that in many ways I am a USophile. So many achievements. In many ways that I would support the US is the "leader of the free world" and all that.
So how in Christ's name did you end up in a situation where the intellectual equivalent of creationists and conspirarcy theorists are genuinely vying for the presidency?
Where did it all go so badly badly wrong.....?

Re: AAAAAaaaaRRRggHHH!!!
Hey. You are talking to a citizen of a nation with it's first coalition government in living history.
And many of those who are members of the "third party" are members of the breakaway from the Labour party in the 80s.
But even with all that in mind Britain is still currently, sort of, a two party system.
I suspect that the "third party" will effectively split into those that will support the conservatives and those that will not.

Re: AAAAAaaaaRRRggHHH!!!
The tale you tell is not America's alone.
The relentless lurch rightwards has taken place here in the UK and (to a lesser extent) elsewhere in Europe too.
But to the degree we see it in the US....
Really and seriously - Your republican candidates would be considered absolute nutjobs in most Western democracies.

Re: Battle-Born!
Did you vote?
How is it decided who can and cannot vote in Republican nominations elections?
Could a bunch of Democrats have signed up to vote in this caucas in order to make a different Republican candidate win and thus throw the cat amongst the pigeons?
If a mass of secret Democrats signed up could they have all voted for Hermain Caine and had him win this vote.
How does it work?
Yours - A confused Brit.

Re: Battle-Born!
Mod PMed me and sent me to Message 531 which is frankly an invaluable guide to this shit.
But I still have a question - Why is there not a Democratic equivalent going on? Is Obama, as the President, automatically the Demo candidate?
Or is there a whole irrelevant Democratic "race" going on that I am blissfully unaware of?
