Congress is broken
So our feckless government is shut down.
Except it isn't shut down.
And they say this supposed shut down cost 2 billion a day?
WTF is wrong with congress?

It contains Republicans. Sadly, they campaigned on shutting the government down. All they have done is made good on their promises.

Re: Congress is broken
I think we see this to a greater or lesser degree in all modern democracies. The politicians have become so detached from a reasonably sensible, but totally disinterested and alienated majority, that all the politicians hear are the voices of the rich and powerful; the people who themselves enjoy political power; and the out and out bat crap crazies. The average citizen, who just wants things to work alright, and not get leaned on too much, just gets forgotten.
Add to that the fact that every senior politician I have met (there's been a handful) makes a weasel look like an angel, and Machiavelli look like Mother Theresa, then this sort of s**t is inevitable :-/

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Congress FUBAR
The T-party Congressman from the western part of our state (North Carolina) is celebrating his success at leading the charge in shutting down the Government.
I simply don't see a way out of the shutdown that will allow all of the parties to save face. Obama can't back down, and is in fact under no pressure to give an inch on ACA now that the ACA exchanges are open. And if he does cave, what would he have to give up 90 days from now when we go through this crap again?
The tea party thinks they've won already so they aren't going to back down. Boehner can push a bill through the House by using Democratic votes but only at the expense of being ousted as chair once again. And if that happens, likely the next person will be a true dick.
And then there is the debt ceiling stuff in about two weeks...

Re: Congress FUBAR
The government has shut down 17 times since 1976, and no productive citizen even noticed.
Government shutdowns are not liked by 2 groups.
1.) people who suck a living off the work of others through taxes.
2.) Authoritarian Socialist Pigs who have a "better" plan for your life than you do, and use government to enforce it upon you.
Productive people would only notice a government shutdown if during one, taxes were no longer collected.

So the next time we hear you complain about how obtrusive government is, I guess we will know your complaint is total nonsense. It's all the same to you whether the federal government is closed or open.

So I am curious: which category do you place veterans in? I guess that would be option 1?
Productive people would only notice a government shutdown if during one, taxes were no longer collected.
Or they notice when they attempt to visit a national park, renew a passport or attempt to collect social security in retirement.
By the way, considering the Right Wing is the one most likely to 'force' medical procedures on women, like transvaginal ultrasounds or tell couples who they are allowed to marry, are they also 'Authoritarian Socialist Pigs'?

Re: Congress FUBAR
Jodean Elliot-Blakeslee, a 69-year-old physician from Boise, has been missing since Sept. 21, when she and friend Amelia Linkert did not return from a camping trip. The body of Linkert, 63, was found four days later, but Blakeslee remains missing. Park officials asked for and received a waiver to keep 10 highly-trained rangers on hand for the search, in addition to a three-person skeleton crew, although none know if they will be paid.

I'd say this is the perfect example of what petro is talking about. Those rangers are hiking around the park like they are on vaction, and are hoping to get paid for it later.

As quoted at "Dispatches":
quote:
We have elected an ungovernable collection of snake-handlers, Bible-bangers, ignorami, bagmen and outright frauds, a collection so ungovernable that it insists the nation be ungovernable, too. We have elected people to govern us who do not believe in government.
We have elected a national legislature in which Louie Gohmert and Michele Bachmann have more power than does the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who has been made a piteous spectacle in the eyes of the country and doesn’t seem to mind that at all. We have elected a national legislature in which the true power resides in a cabal of vandals, a nihilistic brigade that believes that its opposition to a bill directing millions of new customers to the nation’s insurance companies is the equivalent of standing up the the Nazis in 1938, to the bravery of the passengers on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, and to Mel Gibson’s account of the Scottish Wars of Independence in the 13th Century. We have elected a national legislature that looks into the mirror and sees itself already cast in marble.
We did this. We looked at our great legacy of self-government and we handed ourselves over to the reign of morons.
