Re: Itunes account
I know it's Apple fans who get the reputation for unreasonable feelings about the platform, but I'm glad you and Theodoric are here to demonstrate that the truth is the exact opposite: it's Apple's detractors who have allowed passion to run off with their rationality. "Sickly Steve Jobs"? Really?
Apple detractor here (well, sort of). My only problem with Apple is the price. Nice products and nice interface, but way, way overpriced. I thought about building a Hackintosh a while back but never followed through. Each time I have thought about buying an Apple product I have this nagging feeling that I am paying way too much. MP3 player? Nice little 4 MB Creative Zen that cost 40% less than a comparable Apple iPod at the time. Still use it, and still love it.
For those who think that extra money is worth it . . . more power to ya.

Re: Itunes account
Well, what extra money? I mean my iPhone was an even $200 when I picked it up (obviously I had to start a wireless plan, etc), that's actually cheaper than some of the smartphones out there with fewer features and app support. iPads start at $499 which is the same as the "iPad killing" Samsung Galaxy Tab and the LG Optimus and less than the HTC Flyer. Your Asus Transformer comes in fairly cheap, so that's a point in its favor, and I've always been a fan of Asus products (I have one of their laptops).
I agree. Apple has really started to listen to the consumer base in recent times. I wish they had done this throughout their history. The problem here is that I am not in the market for a smart phone or a tablet. Also, I am a huge gamer which Apple really doesn't cater to as well as the PC market. For my last desktop computer I went on Newegg and built the system myself, something you can't do with Apple (unless you go the Hackintosh route). Not to brag too much, but I put together a pretty killer gaming rig for not a lot of money (just under 1,000 including monitor).
This really isn't a dig on Apple. They have every right to protect their platform as they see fit. However, they have closed themselves off to the DIY market which is where I am at.
The "comparable iPod" at the time would have stored your whole music collection, probably.
If memory serves, the 4 GB (did I put MB earlier? sorry) iPod was 110 at the time and I picked up the Creative Zen at 75. It still works great, even if the interface is not as polished as the iPod.
To be quite frank, there is nothing on the Apple that really appeals to me. I can get the same functionality and performance cheaper elsewhere, not to mention a more popular platform that is better supported (Vista never happened ). If you enjoy Apple products then good for you. I'm not looking to piss on anyone's parade.
Added by edit: Getting back to the topic which is non-PC, Apple could do a better job of catering to the desktop consumer to grow mindshare for their non-desktop products.

Also not a fan of buying something that I cannot DIY fix or add on to it, without voiding some hidden user agreement, or having a ton of mac-knowledge to do so.
I'm with you on that one.

Re: Itunes account
I was on the PC treadmill once, too, and it's total bullshit. You wouldn't believe the cash I dropped once to play Mass Effect on my PC, and then imagine my dismay when the PC port of Mass Effect was so buggy I couldn't even keep it running. I dropped 250 on an Xbox 360 and I've not looked back. Plays Netflix, too (they're all doing that these days, I know.)
The problem for me is that I enjoy MMO's (just to brag, currently in the SWTOR beta). No one has made a decent MMO (IMHO) for consoles that I have seen. That could definitely change in the future, but at this point you need a PC if you want to play the best MMO's. The way that MMO's are currently designed it is nearly impossible to port them over to portable devices and consoles. They are too complex. A good example is FFXIV. They tried to make FFXIV as complex as other PC MMO's but still make it accessible to console players. It was a complete failure. DCUO is a major improvement over FFXIV, but it still isn't close the quality of other MMO's.
I will agree that consoles are easily the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to gaming. The PC treadmill isn't quite as bad as you make it out to be, but it is still way more expensive than the console treadmill.

Me neither. I think all platforms have strengths and weaknesses, and that they should be compared on that basis instead of on AE's stupid basis of "PC's are for adults, you lamer."
Exactly. If Angry Birds and Farmville are your addictions of choice a portable device is definitely the way to go. With so many new platforms coming out people really need to understand what their minimum specs are and make purchases around that spec. You don't need a the latest Intel $3,000 dollar rig to check Facebook and watch Netflix.
