I would hardly call it a "post-pc era". there's far too much tablets can't do to be a post PC era. post laptop era? sure, I'll go with that. they just need way more storage space to really be feasible.

Re: Itunes account
consistent interface, the curated app store, and the defined hardware.
In other words: one look, one device. No options. How many different ROMs can you put on an iPhone? Answer: none. How many phones come with iOS stock? Answer: 1. You are constantly left waiting for the sickly Steve Jobs to tell you what devices you want and when you will get them.
Now compare that with Android. The only Android devices that aren't truly open source are due to the carrier or hardware vendors; not google. My old ass Incredible feels new every week because I can easily put a new theme, rom, tweak etc. You name it. Now, compare that with my Droid X. It has way better hardware, but ROM support is crap because of a locked bootloader thanks to Motorola.
Secondly: what's with all the Apple lawsuits? They sue because they can't compete?

Re: Itunes account
Um, like, half a dozen? iPhone 3gs in a couple different sizes, iPhone 4 GSM in a couple different sizes, iPhone 4 CDMA in a couple of different sizes. iPod Touch. iPad. There's like a dozen iOS devices, what are you talking about?
So, your idea of a different "phone" is a different size of iPhone? Plus, I asked for phones, not MP3 players or tablet computers. If you want me to also add devices that come stock with Android or are capable of running Android easily, then I fear Apple will look even worse.
it's Apple's detractors who have allowed passion to run off with their rationality. "Sickly Steve Jobs"? Really?
I'm neither a fanboy nor a detractor. I just see the limitations that apple has placed on their customers. "Sickly Steve Jobs" yes. It was an off the cuff comment about a guy. Sue me.
Right, but that's every single one of them.
No...it's actually not. However, recently more companies are locking down boot-loaders. Like I said in conjunction with this bit you quoted: my Incredible is as open as open gets. I can put whatever I want on it as long as the independent dev made the ROM for it. Not so for my newer, more powerful Droid X (Motorola).
Everybody's doing it.
Nope. Wrong again. The only major headlines I see about a technology company suing competitors on a daily basis is Apple. They are suing Samsung based on [i]sketches[/]....fucking sketches!

Re: Itunes account
It's not limitation, it's curation, the way (for instance) Facebook only shows you the statuses of your friends, not all 800 million of Facebook's users.
The difference is: Apple has numerous times been accused of stealing apps that devs submit. Google? Not so much. Being able to easily submit an app to the market has it's downfalls, but not having to worry about a multi-billion dollar corporation steal them and say "just try and sue us about it" pretty much outweighs any concerns about people not finding your app. Any good app worth it's salt gets rep throughout the android dev community anyways.
If Samsung really is violating them, doesn't Apple have a claim about that?
That's just it: they aren't. Apple claims the Galxy S looks similar....based off of a sketch. How many ways can you make a tablet look?
Here is an article about it: Apple won its Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 European ban based on a design sketch filed in 2004
Here is the sketch:
Now tell me that's not generic as hell.
What's the point of a patent if not to prevent your competitors from exploiting your expensive research investment and just ripping you the fuck off?
Oh...exactly how Apple rips off devs who submit apps to be approved only to be denied, then seeing an app that is EXACTLY THE SAME a little while later??

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
You certainly wouldn't want to copy music that way, but why would you? You don't put songs on an iOS device, you put playlists on.
I've never used an iOS device, so I can't speak to the validity of this statement. However, if it IS true, then how lame is that? Just a couple days ago I heard ONE song that I wanted to put on my phone (my phone doubles as my MP3 player). Was it a problem? Nope. Plug and transfer. Why should I wait until I have an entire playlist?
Aren't we at Day Two of the ScarJo Age, due to hackers grabbing nudie pics off her phone remotely?
It was a blackberry....

Re: Itunes account
Speaking of Google, you'll wish you had Googled before you made that claim:
I did. I googled "apple ripped off my app" and "google ripped off my app". I didn't find the article you mentioned when searching for google, but I found many for apple. I also searched "apple/google stole my app/idea" and came up with zilch for google and a number for apple. Thanks for finding that one though.
If patent offices are going to allow generic patents then it's a free for all
But it is some obscure Euro shit: which is why they aren't pulling this crap in the states.
article writes:
Apple won an injunction and selling ban against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a German court not based on a patent it holds in Europe, but on something called Community Design. The system has been created in the European Union in 2002, and basically allows for anyone to pay and patent not just photos of actual stuff, but also vague design sketches of products, software or packaging.
I blame Europe for allowing this shit, but I doubt they saw this coming. But I also call bullshit on apple.
How many icons are there going to be for such an app that don't combine Apple's wifi symbol with Apple's sync symbol? The kid's icon used symbology that Apple already developed. He didn't create the circular arrows or the , Apple did. How is Apple using their own symbols ripping somebody off?
Had you read the article, you would have seen that he was rejected not for the symbol, but for an alleged "security flaw".
Tell me, how does this read to you?

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
There seems to be somewhat of a consensus that you're picking on a strawman here. No one's claiming that tablets replace PC's, except maybe for the Asus Transformer, which is actually a sort of tablet/PC hybrid.
Well, the thread title does contain post-pc era and the OP goes on about tablets as being the kick off of this "post-PC era", which tells me as well that the OP thinks we have moved beyond the PC because of tablet computers.

First iOS device
I just ordered an iPod Touch for $40 to make my first ever Apple device. Hope it lives up to the hype.

Post-PC era means we're not so reliant on the PC for our everyday work and needs.
If that's what you meant, then we've been there (post PC era) since at least the advent of the laptop computer.....

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
Well, when you are talking shop (tech talk), it is assumed that by "PC" you mean a desktop, else you would say laptop. While you may technically be correct, a laptop isn't always a PC....like when it's a Mac.

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
What about the dozen posts I made specifically saying I use my transformer for most things but use my pc desktop for heavy duty work?
That wasn't the misunderstanding, genius. Calm down and go back and re-read the last couple posts. You'll notice it has something to do with the PC/laptop distinction.

Re: Apple Expanding into the Workplace?
My foray in the IT world says this is a loooong way from happening. There are far too many "special" programs that companies utilize that would make it possible for this to happen. This is why the upgrade path is so slow and why it took a long time for WinXP and IE6 to die. It just takes too much manpower (manpower that is getting outsourced to India, mind you) to make these programs compatible with the wide variety of even browsers, let alone operating systems.
Now, that's not to say they won't allow personnel to use their personal phones instead of providing a company phone, but then security issues come to mind along with enterprise mail servers....
