All done and dusted.

Got to say I'm underwhelmed. Wi fi sync is good but apart from that?

Not feeling it.

The above ontological example models the zero premise to BB theory. It does so by applying the relative uniformity assumption that the alleged zero event eventually ontologically progressed from the compressed alleged sub-microscopic chaos to bloom/expand into all of the present observable order, more than it models the Biblical record evidence for the existence of Jehovah, the maximal Biblical god designer.
-Attributed to Buzsaw Message 53

Moreover that view is a blatantly anti-relativistic one. I'm rather inclined to think that space being relative to time and time relative to location should make such a naive hankering to pin-point an ultimate origin of anything, an aspiration that is not even wrong.

Well, Larni, let's say I much better know what I don't want to say than how exactly say what I do.

Well, woke this morning to a note from apple that it could not restore my iPad. The iPad itself looks just like it did and I have not yet found a way to tell what OS version it is running. Restarted iTunes and it said there was an update waiting. Looks like I am still at square one.

My guess is that it didn't upgrade, but you can find the version under Settings -> General, then scan down to the line that says "Version".

Why don't you guys put something not iOS on your iPad? Like something open source/community modded? Do you not have that option?

Nope, we don't have that option.

Wait wait wait....people spend exorbitant amounts of cash on these devices and cannot put any other firmware on them?

Point goes to Android based devices....

maybe a step closer...or maybe not
So I started over again, told it to start the upgrade, got a popup saying "Accessing iTunes Store" and that is about it. It's been awhile now and still just that message, no downloading update message, no working message, just "Accessing iTunes Store".

Interesting.

AbE: iPad itself just says "Sync in progress".

Why? Why would I want to put anything on an iOS device but iOS?

Building operating systems is what Apple is best at.

Apparently I should have tried to update at 3 am last night; still can't authenticate my firmware. Apple's getting hammered again I guess.

Re: maybe a step closer...or maybe not
So, a suggestion that may go over your head somewhat, but:

If the step you're hanging on is actually downloading the firmware you can get the firmware from outside of iTunes. For an iPad 2, you want one of these:

iPad 2 (Wifi only)
iPad 2 (AT&T data service)
iPad 2 (Verizon data service)

For firmwares for other devices, check out the Giz link below:

http://gizmodo.com/...how-to-fix-the-ios-5-update-error-3200

Once you've downloaded the firmware, inside iTunes on your computer, with the device plugged in, you can Option-click (Windows: shift-click) the "Update" button, navigate to where you downloaded the firmware, and select it. It should be faster to get the firmware file this way. You may continue to get "Unknown error 3100" (or some other number in the 3000-3200 range), that's going to keep happening until a nation of iPhone users stops needing to individually authenticate the digital signature on the firmware (blah blah blah don't worry about it, in other words, just be patient and try it again later.)

Why? Why would I want to put anything on an iOS device but iOS?

Maybe if you had the option, you might want to. However, there are many other roms out there that FAR surpass iOS (Cyanogen and MIUI spring to mind). But since you cannot put anything else on there, you think you wouldn't want to.

And yes, I have used iOS. IMO, ALL iterations of iOS are the same. Just like ALL iPhones are exactly the same, looks wise anyways. They might offer a few new features, but no real difference. Now, Android, otoh, Froyo and Gingerbread are vastly different, not just functionally, but aesthetically as well.

Don't take what I say as fanning the flames of fanboy war because that is not my intention. I got an iOS device so I could see what the hype was about (and it was cheap) and so I could make a more informed decision about whether or not to stick with Android or get an iPhone since I am eligible for an upgrade. I was able to put a number of different versions of iOS on my Touch and they were all exactly the same. No thanks, I'll stick to Android and it's freedom.

That's what Winterboard is for.

Now, Android, otoh, Froyo and Gingerbread are vastly different, not just functionally, but aesthetically as well.

Inconsistency in UI isn't a virtue. And functionally, they're all Java middleware on a basic kernel, forever doomed to be slower than equivalent iOS hardware.

Wi fi sync is good but apart from that?

The new notifications center? Location-based reminders? Siri, if you're on an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S?

No joy?

Inconsistency in UI isn't a virtue.

How many Android devices have you tried? You say inconsistency, I say options. I can customize the fuck out of my Incredible. I can make it look just like iOS or as unique as I want.

{abe} Secondly, major Android revisions are consistent (Froyo, Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, etc.). It is just the hardware manufacturer overlay that is different (Motorloa=Blur, Samsung=TouchWiz, HTC=Sense).

forever doomed to be slower than equivalent iOS hardware.

ROFL! Good one crash. How many dual core iPhones are there?

I think Siri is just the iPhone 4S.
