My oil furnace has electronic ignition. Whatever source I supply will have to handle that, the hot water impeller, and the four zone thermostats and valves. I think the oil line is gravity fed. I installed a high efficiency electronically controlled motor last year; I think its power demands are small.
I'm pretty sure there is a single line to the furnace from the panel for everything. A simple switch or some bypass wiring should do the trick.
The solution is practical for emergency use, I think. I'll check the amps at the panel--even if I need a deep cycle marine battery, it's a cheaper and greener solution then a gas or diesel generator: no CO, no tanks of gas or diesel, easy setup and maintenance. I could always add a charge controller and solar panel later which would let me recharge the furnace battery and my LED lanterns.
I really appreciate the idea. I'll let you know how it goes.

Any ideas for those of us with forced hot air? Oh, wait, I have a generator!
Speaking of which, it just got its annual service today. It passed and is ready for another year.
What I really need is an Internet generator so I can have Internet when all the lines are down. Oh, wait, it's called DirecTV.
But I can't have DirecTV, no line of sight to the satellite.

Umm so you people experience blackouts often at the most i get a few hrs per years when they are doing maintainence work or something stops the supply, but never for longer then an hr so far.
But I can't have DirecTV, no line of sight to the satellite.
What about internet via the mobile phone or are the towers down too when the power goes out?
Its a grate solution for people that have bad weiring to their homes and cant get a decent connection i think the connection is somewhere around 10/2 on the 20 EUr per month packages (in my country), depends on signal strainght though.

No line of sight anywhere on your property? The cable can run a fair distance from the dish to the box. I actually had to cut a tree down that kept interfering. The only problem I ever have with DirecTV is heavy snow when I have to clean the snow off the dish.

3G (the locally available mobile communications standard) is used by the iPad, so that was our Internet connection during the outage. Unfortunately the iPad isn't a real computer, for example, try downloading a file in Safari or transferring a file to another computer in your home. Also 3G is pretty slow.
But 4G is 10x faster (around 10 mbs) and should be available nationwide by the end of 2014, and possibly in our area by as soon as the end of 2012. It would be the logical way to connect anything to the Internet if it weren't for cost - unlimited bandwidth, which I would need, costs way more than any of the other alternatives.
But paying for a month of capped service once or twice a year when there are outages would be fine. Assuming that the outage is only for a few days to a week, the standard amount of monthly bandwidth should do it.
I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the way cell phone service was deemed essential, so the cell towers have backup generators.

Oh, sure, there are places on the property that would work. A small tower in the backyard could see over the house, or we could mount it on the roof, or we could mount it out at the street, though that's 300 feet away.
We originally had DirecTV but switched for HD because we would have had to buy a new dish and find a new location for it. We already had cable coming into the house and had cable Internet, so it was an easy choice. Plus we discovered we liked never having to clean off the snow, and never having rain storms interfere with the signal.
If you have a DVR then snow is a particular problem with satellite TV. You think it recorded something while no one was watching, but you start watching the recorded show and only then are reminded that, oh yeah, it was snowing at the time and no one was watching so no one knew to go clean off the dish.
But nothing against DirecTV (or Dish Network). While we had it it was fine.

Dang i just cheked out the offers on these mobile internet packages actually not bad the speed is from 21 Mb/s on some locations 42 Mb/s these are top speeds cause signal straight and some other factors effect the speed. 99,6% of Slovenia is covered for the 21 Mb speeds and some 40% for the 42 mb speeds
America seems to be lacking behind
Though the way they sell this is silly the large package for 18 EUR includes 15 GB of data you can dl, after that the speed droops to 64 kb/s lol. You can buy more GB,s to dl after that lol or just wait for the next month lol.
You can also get a pre payed version of this where you pay say 5 EUR and dl an x amount of data then have no connection unless you fill up the card again.
But you have no monthly fees for this you do have to buy the card thing y in this case though.

Oh yeah? Well, we've got Kim Kardashian and...and...the Tea Party, yeah, that's it, the Tea Party. So there!
Seriously, here in the states we've been hearing that our Internet and cell phone technology has been lagging behind the rest of the world for quite some time. Finland and Korea are usually held up as shining examples.

Yea well we have somewhere arround 96 mobile phones per 100 people though i think the actual numbers are higher cause i know of no one that does not have a mobile phone yes the old people the young people everyone has a mobile phone, and i know lots of people who have 2 or more mobile phones.
edit:
The data 96 phones per 100 people was from 2004 and already over the average of Europe with 90 phones per 100 people.

As Percy suggested, we've got lots of behind.
Take a tour of Europe, then come to the U.S.--ride our trains, drive our roads, shake with fear on our bridges and observe our crumbling cities.

Back on topic
it was so warm today and we have been experiencing strange climate for the past few years where the temperatures spike then drop then spike again drop of a cliff again, kinda pissing me off i never know if i should fire up the furnace in the morning or not.

Oh come on, it's not fair to compare the rest of the US to Detroit.
