Re: The US Of A Blessed With Capitalist Wealth.
Pass some crackers, cheese and a glass of organic red wine. I'll pay for that myself, thanks.
Too bad you're now dead. That wine wasn't as organic as the label made it out to be; laced with loads of pesticides.
Damn... if only someone would have been in charge of making sure that didn't happen. Too bad we got rid of all those regulations in favor of unfettered capitalist greed.
Well... too bad for you that is.

Re: Domestic fairness versus global fairness
I noticed you negatized me. Perhaps you think me a brat for rejecting global fairness? Indeed I believe that we in America should take care of our own first. Fairness throughout the world translates into the continued demise of the US Middle Class, sir.
Quite honestly, I value my wage and station in life over helping Quan from Indonesia climb into my spot. Yes, im selfish. Yes, I live in the former greatest country the world has ever seen. No, I don't want the whole world to be equal....for that will mean that my spot in life with be down towards the bottom under the category of menial labor.
I believe that my father earned my spot for me through his labor. I believe that keeping upstarts like Islamic Iran in check are good for the US middle class. We simply cant and wont share the wealth we deserve with a globe full of competitive foreigners.
Wait till we are dead and then perhaps our kids can sort it out with the foreign competition, though I doubt it since they have to pay more for the education that foreign governments subsidize for their youth.
Why so many words when two were sufficient: "im selfish"?

Re: Domestic fairness versus global fairness
Survival by its very nature is all about self interest, family interest, or national interest over that of inclusion of others.
Bullshit. It isn't a case of 'us or them'. We can survive and so can they.
The thinking that you seem to advocate is a sort of global unity, whereupon humans come to believe that teamwork will produce better results for everyone than will self interest.
Because it will. It has in every circumstance where it's been tried. Working together always produces better results for the group (and, by extension, the lot of its members) than does working alone in self-interest. Those who advocate for us to work in our own self-interest are the ones who don't want the group to succeed; because they profit off of its failure.
so the next question: Can global teamwork and fairness possibly help everyone better than any of us can do on our own or with our union, lobbyist, party, lawyer etc.
Your idea of fair:
Go figure!

Re: This is interesting
George Lucas predicts movie tickets will go up to 50.00 someday.
Perhaps. But they'll have to start making movies people actually want to watch before anyone will pay that kind of money to see a movie.
How many times can Jennifer Aniston dump someone before it gets old?

Re: This is interesting
52. The number of workers aged 55 and up is about to surpass the number of workers aged 24 to 34 for the first time ever.----This is where I fit in. We are getting older, grayer, and louder! Expect a new wave of aging activists!
You might not like this, but neither do we.
According to an article in the local paper, it is becoming more difficult for younger folk to find 'good' work. Not because there isn't work to be done, but because decreasing retirement/pension plan opportunities are forcing older workers to stay at their jobs longer. In the past they would have retired comfortably in their fifties; many now work well into their sixties.
Imagine spending the last sixteen to twenties years of your life in school only to have to wait ten more years for a suitable job to open up, and being forced into minimum wage crap labor that is insufficient for starting or raising a family regardless of how many hours you work.
