Because the secret american motto is "work hard enough and you can be the 1%". The american dream is built on selling the masses that if they aren't yet rich, they will be if they work hard and long enough. Why would the rest of us want to harm what we aspire to be? See that businessman over there making 6 or 7 figures a year? Work hard enough and you can be just like him. See those rock stars on MTV cribs? Work hard enough and you can have that too.
John Steinbeck put it best:
quote:
Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

Re: Oni Right On The US. Straggler Straggles
quote:Norway dropped from mostly free to moderately free in the 2012 Index, primarily because of expansive public spending. The government has focused on containing expensive welfare programs, but government spending as a percentage of GDP rose sharply.
Admittedly, that's where the present regime is taking/has taken the US of A.
You can cite exceptions relative to some aspects of my message. By and large, the US of A is and has been the most productive, free, prosperous and benevolent.
Did you notice that, even using the particular ranking chosen by the website you just linked to, this isn't true? The USA is ranked 10th, behind Mauritius, Canada, New Zealand and Chile, and only the barest fraction ahead of Denmark.

WHO announced the data on liters of Alcohol consumed per capita in 188 countries, Slovenia came in 9th place at 15.2 Liters of pure alcohol consumed per person.
The fucking health nut fuckers are holding us back we could easily claim first place if we kick them out.
We came second - booyah! The only country to drink more was Moldova, and what the hell else is there to do in Moldova?

Re: This is interesting
If we were to take that 1980 $4.00 and extrapolate it through an inflation adjustment calculator, it would be roughly equal to the $17.00 an hour that I now make.
I decided to check this. The calculator here from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics says that $4 in 1980 is equivalent to $11.31 in 2013. This one from WestEgg doesn't go up to 2013, but gives $4 in 1908 as $10.97 in 2012. Adujstforinflation.com reckons $4 in 1980 to be $11.15 in 2012.
So, they're all pretty consistent. You're earning about 45% more than you were in 1980.
