Survival by its very nature is all about self interest, family interest, or national interest over that of inclusion of others.
Only in a naive sense. A more comprehensive understanding comes to the conclusion that when you help others, you help yourself.
You need to hie yourself to the science library and pick up some mathematics textbooks on game theory.

The thinking that you seem to advocate is a sort of global unity, whereupon humans come to believe that teamwork will produce better results for everyone than will self interest.
That's because it has long since been proven that this is actually the preferred strategy. If you want to maximize your own outcomes, you have to look out for others and help them along, too.

so the next question: Can global teamwork and fairness possibly help everyone better than any of us can do on our own or with our union, lobbyist, party, lawyer etc.
Yes. In fact, cooperative strategies always outperform selfish ones. Again, you need to get yourself to the science library and find yourself some mathematics textbooks on game theory.
Look up "Prisoner's Dilemma" and "Tragedy of the Commons." If you are truly interested in survival, you need to look beyond the next moment. It does you no good to survive today if the actions you take ensure you will not survive tomorrow.

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Minds are like parachutes. Just because you've lost yours doesn't mean you can use mine.

I'm sorry, WHAT? Former? Who the heck is better than the US?
Norway. On all measures of societal health, Norway kicks our ass. Better standard of living, longer lives, less stress, etc.

Also note that "The US" extends to those nations who's entire economy depend on us.
Well, there you go: Norway.
