Re: The Puritan state
... against abortion and homosexuality and other sexual violations of God's law, and not permit evolution to be taught in the schools.
Bible would be the law of the land ... make Christianity clearly the rule of the land.
Faith, I am not sure the folks here fully appreciate what you bring to us here. You are a most wonderful reminder of why we have the kind of constitution we have today. You, Faith, you in all your anti-human, anti- reality, backward thinking, christian sharia fervor are exactly the type of people and politics the founders were guarding us against.
With all the problems this nation has, with our minds occupied in the day-to-day, it is good to be reminded from time to time of that which still requires our most vigilant efforts to defeat.
You serve so well as that reminder. Thank you.

Re: The Puritan state
Watch out about that Sharia smear though. The Muslims would behead you for violations of their law not just keep you from political office, and short of that they'd spit on you and push you off the sidewalk for not being one of them. The Pope would stick you in an iron maiden or stretch you on the rack or seal you up inside a wall
Oh, that's right. You guys do the burn-at-the-stake thing.

Re: Virtual States
Poor persecuted you.........
Now, now, Coragyps, there is "persecuted" and then there is "persecuted."
Faith's persecution is that she and those who have like religious beliefs have to share the levers of governmental power with not-so-fundamentalist protestants, jews, atheists and ... eww ... them ... [shudder] catholics [/shudder]!
She and hers cannot just dictate all things to all segments of society especially when it comes to things like personal privacy (against - especially in your bedroom) and proselytising the public schools (for - but only so long as it is the "right" kind of proselytising by the "right" sect).
Treating Faith and her religious kin like normal, common citizens of a democratic, free society and away from absolute dictatorial control over every thought and action in society is a grave persecution indeed. Just think how it might look if everyone were treated like that as a matter of law. How sinful!

quote:
Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.
-George Santayana, Reason in Common Sense, 1905
... even if I may think they go off in wrong directions on secondary points.
The problem with all theocracies, Faith, is that these "secondary" points eventually become "primary" points to the sect in power. Other sects resist so there are trials, hangings, burnings. Often one of the opposition sects takes over the state. More trials, hangings, burnings.
You may feel you are on the rightous side of the sword in the beginning but you could very quickly find yourself on the pointy side. That is why theocracies are evil.

Re: The idea of "hate speech" is another infringement on religious freedom,
perhaps we can consider the Senate to represent the state
[OT]
That was the original design and intent of the Constitution. The House was to represent the people and the senate was to represent the states.
The people elected the representatives and the state legislatures would elect (appoint) the senator.
If I recall, Federalist Papers 60, 61, 62 somewhere in there abouts, discusses the senate and why it needed to be a body selected by the organs of the state instead of by popular vote of the people as are representatives. The senators would carry the duty of representing the interests of the state that elected them, not the interests of the people. It was feared that if the people had direct control over both chambers there would be no balance to the demanding excesses of the people.
This was changed in 1913 with the 17th Amendment.
Seems the founders were right. The people have control over both chambers and there is no one left to say "NO" to the excesses of the people.
Of course no one can prove this, but I suspect that if the 17th Amendment was not there and the senate was the chamber of the states then a lot of the present federal fiscal woes and overbearing federal arrogance would have been killed in the senate since they would have been contray to the interests of the states.
We screwed the pooch in 1913.
But the people wanted both chambers and now has both chambers and we the people have the government for which we voted. Arrogant, broke and out of control.
[/OT]

Re: First Amendment Violations
You aren't interested in what I think. I've given my honest opinion here many times and all it gets is twisted beyond recognition.
A subject comes up in a thread, you have an opinion and relay it. As with most opinions, from everyone not just you, there is disagreement, misunderstanding or confusion so the question/answer sessions begin.
Faith, please take this as constructive. These are my observations.
You seem to think that a lot of your opinions do not require support since the issue is self-evident to you. It is not so self-evident to others so the questions keep coming. When push-back comes saying the answers are insufficient you feel personally insulted. You, again, feel that what evidence or proof or answers you give should be sufficient.
Here is what I see as the crux. In a lot of cases here you have not thought through your positions sufficiently so you have no further answers and rely back on the self-evident answers already given and, yet, the push-back keeps coming.
Rather pointedly if I may, and this is just my opinion, you are getting a lot of questions, counter-arguments and push-backs because your positions are in the minority here and, again in my opinion, indefensible.
Everyone is here (yes, even you) because we find these types of discussions, disagreements and all, to be, not just stimulating, but down right fun. A big part of the fun is developing and evolving arguments and counter-arguments over the course of the thread.
You seem to have a problem developing and evolving your positions and arguments. You have given your position and argument (which you see as self-evident) giving answers to the push-backs without thought or refinement which just deepens the problems, leads to more uncomfortable questions which you cannot adequately answer. The frustrations of the perceived personal insults take over and you melt down into verbal abuse.
You are a fun person to have here. Your opinions are minority and it is fun to explore the options and rip your arguments to shreds. Everyone pulls on everyone's tail in these disagreements and frankly, Faith, it is loads of fun to pull on your tail. We do not want to lose you.
My suggestion is this. Do not be so sensitive and take these tail twists as personal insults. It takes a lot of different personalities to make a community so interesting. Given your personality you will reach the point where you want to throw sand in someone's face and punch them in the nose. Don't feel you are alone in that, by the way.
When you reach that point .. quit. Take a break before you explode. Go have a cup of tea, take a bubble bath, kick the dog, whatever helps to ease the stress. When you are done mentally strangling the shit out of your detractor, think through the issue at hand as dispassionately as you can and try to devise a different approach or slant to the argument.
Come back to us armed and ready to have more fun in the fight.
For what it's worth.

Re: Tyranny
This is beyond cognitive dissonance.
Not really, Theo. It is quite consistant with Faith's desire.
Moslem theocracies do not allow you or I any power so as to keep the nation moslem.
Faith wants a christian theocracy where you and I have no power so as to keep the nation christian. Except her christian theocracy would stem from the flower child side of her sect. All peace love and happy.
Where she gets off the horse is in negelecting the fact that the moslem theocracies involve gross violations of human rights by necessity to keep the nation pure. And so eventually must her flower child theocracy.

In California, my residence is worth about 3-4 hundred thousand dollars.
So please tell us what it's like to have a 6 million dollar home.
