You also need to factor in the influence of 24 hour news and its appetite for something, anything, to fill the airtime.

Few channels will actually promote any conspiracy theories, but they will broadcast enough alarmist, poorly researched and unbalanced crap to feed the theories.
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
