Who the hell is the CCoI?

Cogent Communications Group, Inc.
(NASDAQ:CCOI)????

Certainly not the Cancer Center of Irvine......
or the Crafts Council of Ireland....

You do like being terse & cryptic.

Re: Reality Can Be Ugly
The word is banned only in use by jar. Most everyone else can use it.

The phrase CCoI was coined by jar a few years ago. It refers to the Biblical Creationist Fundamentalist Christians who ignore critical thinking and parrot what they are taught without wanting to think. Christian radio is usually a rich source of CCoI propaganda.

I believe a lot of what they say, and have been accused of preferring fantasy over reality. Time will tell whether or not I bet on the wrong pony.

I guess there's not going to be any further questioning of the correlation of lower income and education with increasing religiosity. Boy, nothing like a little hard evidence to squelch discussion. I guess this is what Dawn Bertot would call fascism!

So are atheists behaving insanely by ignoring all the benefits of religion? No, of course not, because the kinds of lives that result from lack of exposure to all the religious malarkey are far better in terms of health and longevity. The differences in income and education only emerge statistically when comparing the major religions, but one only has to examine an extreme sect such as the FLDS (polygamous Mormon group) to see firsthand the obvious negative effects of high religiosity. FLDS members suffer from living remotely with low incomes and insufficient access to adequate healthcare combined with the ********* that encourages behaviors like inbreeding that causes mental and physical disabilities in children.

The average lives of human beings have steadily improved over time as we better understand reality. It makes perfect sense that the more of reality one ignores the worse one will fare.

Re: Debt can be good
Revisiting this topic, since I saw the following article in todays news:

5 Facts About The National Debt

  • As of July 31, the federal governments total debt stands at $19.845 trillion, according to the Treasury Departments monthly reckoning. Nearly all of it is subject to the statutory debt ceiling, which is currently set at just under $19.809 trillion. As a result, as of the end of July there was just $25 million in unused debt capacity remaining.

  • The nations debt is now bigger than its gross domestic product, which was an estimated $19.23 trillion in the second quarter. Debt as a share of GDP rose steeply during and after the 2008 financial crisis. Since 2013 it has equaled or exceeded GDP, which had not been seen since the end of World War II.

You used to always talk about debt ratio to GDP.

Is there any way this will affect our retirement?

  • Though U.S. government debt is perhaps the most widely held class of security in the world, as of the end of July 27.6% of the debt (about $5.48 trillion) is owed to another arm of the federal government itself. The single biggest creditors, in fact, are Social Securitys two trust funds, which together held more than $2.9 trillion in special non-traded Treasury securities, or 14.7% of the total debt. (Social Security revenues exceeded benefit payments for many years; the surplus was required by law to be invested in Treasuries.) Another big holder: the Federal Reserve system, which as of early August collectively held nearly $2.5 trillion worth of Treasuries, or 12.4% of the total debt. (The Feds holdings are included in the debt held by public category.)

Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. RC Sproul

il Donald has never been personally bankrupt, he has always protected his personal assets. It is his businesses and those that counted on his businesses that have gone bankrupt.

There is no reason to think he will personally go bankrupt anytime in the future. Remember, former Presidents do get a pension that is currently about $200K as well as another non-Taxable expense account.

As I understand it, he has let some of his companies go bankrupt, leaving others saddled with the debts. If he sees personal advantage then it is rather too plausible that he might do the same to the nation. No matter how bad the effects for anyone else.

    Re: Debt can be good
    Here's a really stupid question.

For decades I've been hearing that the federal government has been taking money out of our social security payments. For example, when George W. Bush was waging wars on two fronts without ever allocating any funds for them, just where was that money coming from?

IOW, just what the fuck is going on?

    Re: Debt can be good
I did a bit of internet research...

Did George W. Bush 'borrow' from Social Security to fund the war in Iraq and tax cuts? from a website called PolitiFact.

They explain that it's mostly false and have a line of reasoning. The bottom line seems to be our ability to borrow, period. If we can always do it, we can keep pushing the due date forward in time.

    Re: Debt can be good
Goodness graceous me. That's a very bad way of going about. Eventually someone is going to pay.

I can put my own case, for example. My parents always taught me: "never, ever, spend more than you earn and put some money away". I recently went to my bank to get a mortgage on an investment property. Due to the deposit, my credit rating, value of our house as collateral, etc., I got the loan with the condition that I pay it off before retirement age. Now, that's going to cause me and my wife to struggle to make the payments, but we'll manage. Only just.

After that the same bank offered me a loan on buying a new, expensive vehicle. A vehicle I can not afford at all. Even without the loan for the house.

If I took out that loan, our children would never inherent anything. Not even a sofa. So, someone has to pay...
