Books
Hey Dr. A,
Brandon, my nephew, just adores (sorry Brandon for using that word)
the way you, Mod, Jar & Percy explains things and all
the diagrams he copied from y'all on the other thread
that he took with us to the Grand Canyon. You sure
gave his little dictionary a workout! lol Which reminds me
that I also need to get him another for his backpack and
hardback for home.
Since you, Rox, Mod, Jar & Percy are so concise in explain
things, that a kid with a good dictionary can understand
you, y'all should collaborate on a few books
on the subjects!! That would be great to supplement
kids education in school & city libraries!

DW1, I hear you on kids being sponges! I remember
when I was 4 I used to bug the shit out of my parents
to teach me how to write scribbles on paper like they did!
After a couple weeks of bugging them (they thought I was
too young) I wore them down. I was reading at 4th grade
level by the time I started 1st grade. I read anything &
everything I could I could get my hands on! I remember
when we were home on leave, I was about 5, I found my
2 uncles, they were in H.S., comic books, but these were
no ordinary comics, oh no! They were SEX comics! I walked
up to mom & dad what those people were doing cause
all they were saying was.....ooooooh...moan on the page
that I read to them. Parents said to me let us see that!
My uncles had found Grandpas' stash! Grandma called the
boys in and she grabbed them by the ears and a switch
and they were not happy when she got thru with them.
Grandpa was in the dog house for awhile! Anyway, mom
& dad were always very honest with us kids, so we sat at
the table and went thru that comic and they answered
every question I asked, no more, no less, in terms a 5 year
old could understand.
P.S. Brandon watched the 2 pt. series on PBS called 'Australia-The
First 2 Billion Years' He called me after each episode (after
midnight my time!) just so excited talking about the strata
animals and what the climate must have felt like he especially liked
the graphics with the guy on the ground and the first land
animals walking around him.

My dad was in SAC during 'Nam, at the time they were always
on alert. He worked on the electronics in the B-52s and
the warheads. When they first came out with the stealth
bomber (when it was still top secret) he snuck me into the
hanger ( I was very much daddys' girl) and let me sit in
the pilots seat, it was so tiny in there! He retired in '76.
My husband was on the USS Kearsarge(?) during 'Nam also
He told me about 1 guy he saw that happened to, they had
to scrape him off the deck!
My brother was Navy, they were sent to the Gulf of Oman(?)
He said some of the guys, including him, were really sweating
it out about the depth charges on deck & sure as hell they
didn't need to use them they used the fuel from them to
make hooch! Man some of the stuff the 3 men in my life
told me would keep me ROTFLMFAO all night long!

Great link! It didn't even think of that.
That was a learning experience for both of
us! Mine was that a blind cane ain't worth
crap on rocky terrain! His was learning to lead
around someone who was learning to be blind.
He did a fantastic job! He explained everything
he saw down to the tiniest detail! He did a good
job on the camp fire. The tent kept falling down
the 1st night, so we ended up shoving the bags
inside and crawling inside and slept like that. We
laughed so hard it exhausted us! He found another
camper the 2nd day and he showed him how to set it
up.
He went back home with his own diagrams of the strata
I came back with a black eye, a bloody nose & a lot of
cuts & bruises, lots & lots of bruises! It was...AWESOME!!!

blindness
No I haven't received any BS. One day I was ok and I woke
the next morning blind. Diabetes. I didn't even know I
had it. No signs what so ever. I thought I'd had a stroke
in my sleep. I never panic so I waited til my sister woke and
told her what I thought happened, she started to panic
but I got her calm so she could drive me to the clinic.
I started laughing at her because the panic just tickled
me at the time cause I was picturing the scene from I
Love Lucy when she went into labor! I could here her
banging into stuff trying to get dressed and find her keys.
I don't let people do anything for me, I have to learn to
do things myself. It's been an interesting & at times a
comical journey. I can't wait to see what lies ahead of
me on this next chapter of this journey.

DW1
Great suggestions on the books. I have Baylor to the north
of me, ATM to the south, here I am, stuck in the middle...
My parents taught us to always question and research to
find our own answers, and to check as many sources as
I can. Dad was a perfectionist, he checked our homework
every night and if there was 1 eraser mark on the paper,
even if the answers were correct, it had to be done all
over again, and there was no copying from the original
either. That taught us to do things the right time, it saves
time in the long run.
When I was a sophomore in H.S. we had to write an essay
for our end of year paper (1000 words) well by the time dad
got finished with questioning my points I was making and the
research, and rewriting and having to defend my paper to
dad, then he deemed it was ready to turn in. It ended up
being 36 pages. My teacher asked to keep it for some
reason or other.
My niece is teaching him how to research which he relishes.
Not much to do on those long, dark nights in North Pole,
Alaska.

Thanks
I will definitely email them. Brandon can order whatever he
wants, he understands about research and I know he will
use them to find what he is looking for. I know he's reading
this if he has finished his homework. He takes after his mom
in that regard, school work always comes first with them.
Hell when she was growing up, she lived with us many
years, I could not get that child to goof off even for 5 mins.
after coming home from school! Even in kindergarten she
refused to watch the kids shows until she finished her school
work 1st.

Hi Jar,
He's going to love those links! Man! I wish I had the
internet around when I was growing up! I didn't even
see my 1st electric typewriter until we got back to the
world!

Re: Books
He understood y'all after I taught him to use a dictionary.
Sometimes he would struggle a little and sometimes more so.
But he has the desire to do things on his own 'til understanding
sinks in.
When does your other book going to be published? I want
to buy it for him. He cherishes his books.

Re: Berkeley resources
Far too often it seems folk underestimate what kids can do. I taught my sister math with M&Ms about when she could talk. I'd put one M&M in front of her and me and say "One for you and one for me." Then "Two for you and one, two for me." By the time it got to "..and one, two, three for me." she had the whole concept of counting down pat.
She learned to read with Song of Hiawatha:
quote:
On the shores of Gitche Gumee,
Of the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood Nokomis, the old woman,
Pointing with her finger westward,
O'er the water pointing westward,
To the purple clouds of sunset.
Fiercely the red sun descending
Burned his way along the heavens,
Set the sky on fire behind him,
As war-parties, when retreating,
Burn the prairies on their war-trail;
And the moon, the Night-sun, eastward,
Suddenly starting from his ambush,
Followed fast those bloody footprints,
Followed in that fiery war-trail,
With its glare upon his features.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Name & Avatar
quote:
Aurelia (interesting and agreeable avatar; I will inquire no further, though I believe that I have been of like mind for half a century),
I got the name from Julius Caesars' mother, Aurelia Cotta.
And the avatar off the web, I liked the way the A was crossed
because for some reason it reminded me of space and how
space seems to be so infinite on our spec of sand in the universe.

Re: Berkeley resources
I believe in using visuals to teach kids, it seems they pick
up concepts quicker. Even the kids that have a harder time
learning the material from a chalkboard or a teacher talking
to the class can keep up with their classmates.
I never thought of using m&ms before! I bet your sister
couldn't wait 'til big brother got home from school! If I had
an older sibling it would have cost them a fortune buying
m&ms and I would have been doing calculus by 6th grade
and been very, very fat! lol
