I recalculated the rise of the mounded area. It's a rise of 160 feet in one mile. Pretty shallow but still I don't see how layers are going to follow its contour.
PaulK isn't the only one who tried to make that absurd case. Both Tanypteryx and Cat Sci did also.
A rise of 160 feet in one mile is 1 inch in 10 yards. You couldn't see that rise with the naked eye. Why do you imagine that sediment following that essentially level 'contour' is absurd?

Re: Best evidence for the title of this thread yet
Here's another one that seems even more obvious.
I'm struggling to think of any way that doesn't represent a heavy object falling into semi-solid layers of sediment, then new layer forming above it. The layer denoted by the arrow seems to have been almost liquid.
One thing that is certain - that object was not pushed up from below.
It's the sort of thing you could easily model using layers of different coloured sand and dropping a marble into it, then adding more layers.

I was out walking along our coast today (I live near to the White Cliffs on the English South Coast) and saw this (use the magnifier):
I'm no geologist, but that looks like a dome of chalk - ie layers of chalk not set down horizontally with layers above following the contour. It also appears to have an insert of a different rock.
(The chalk is brown at this location because the beach and an artificial groin protects the cliff from the normal erosion seen on the cliff at the point at the far end of the picture.)

Re: sedimentation on slope
Surely you are not saying that if you pour a bag of granulated sugar onto a tabletop that it will form a uniform flat surface?

As a general guide, that's a damn good strategy. You should apply it more often. In fact always.
