There are those who very much look forward to seeing the end of 2016. Well, they'll have to wait a bit longer. One second longer to be exact. Because after 23:59:59, instead of immediately going to 0:00:00 of the next day, we'll have 23:59:60 as a
leap second is added to correct
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
For those who might be interested, the matter of leap seconds formed the basis of the infamous creationist PRATT that the earth's rotation is slowing down at a fast rate. Yes, the earth's rotation is slowing down, but the creationist rate is 33,000 to 50,000 times too great. It turns out that the claim's originator, most likely Walter Brown, didn't understand what leap seconds are. {shameless_plug}I examine that claim and explain what leap seconds are and why we need them on my page,
DWISE1'S CREATION / EVOLUTION PAGE: Earth's Rotation is Slowing.{/shameless_plug}
Though actually, it's already happened. Although it is 21:37 PST here on the West Coast, it is 05:37 UTC. So the leap second event already happened over 5 and a half hours ago. Sorry for not being more timely.
