Back in the 60s we used to see the contrails of multi-engine aircraft flying due north over Canada. The obvious question was, "What's up there that anybody would conceivably want to go to?" The answer was Russia and the aircraft were B-52s (potentially) carrying nuclear weapons. As it turns out, we were probably in more danger from American broken arrows than we were from Russia.
