The ten commandments are still a useful guideline towards the lifestyle God wants us to live.

I would say that we are still expected to follow them. That's what I was always taught, anyway.

Why should we follow the ten commandments, and not ALSO follow the other instructions given in the OT to the Jews? Both are the same - instructions given by God to the Jews as to how to live. Yet today, most christians would say we should observe the ten commandments; few would say we should also observe the six hundred and something other instructions on how to live. Why?

That was explained to me as being because, if the Jews couldn't hold themselves to all their laws, Gentiles shouldn't be asked to either.
Christianity is a more gregarious faith than Judaism and it is open to anyone (or really liberal Judaism for everyone + Messiah). Judaism, traditionally, is one based on family lineages and is not as gregarious. Sadly, this has caused them much hardship over the years.
Why do Orthodox Jews still keep to their strict laws? Well remember, they aren't Christians and so they don't believe in the Christian covenant with God established through the death of Christ.

Which is fair enough, and reasonable - but if that's the case, then why do christians have an obligation to keep the ten commandments? They're in precisely the sameboat.

That's not my interpretation, I can sin, & go to heaven.

Yup, that's true. Even though you sin you can still go to heaven through Jesus.

So are the commandments just that, or recommendations, because they have no relevance as to whether I go to heaven. They're not very "commanding" if I go to heaven anyway.

They are commandments for how God wants us to live on earth. I believe that if you follow them you're life will be better.

All I have to do is sin as much as I like, & accept Jesus. Whether you think I have accepted Jesus or not is subjective on your part. I may well accept him right at the end in the last breath of life I have. Get out of jail free.

Well, the Bible says God is all forgiving. So I suppose you are right to a certain degree. But sounds kinda risky to wait your whole life because you never know when you'll die.

Oh I see what you mean. If they are commandmends then what is the punishment for not obeying them sense you can still go to heaven? I would have to say the punishments for not obeying the commandments would be received in life.
