CK writes: of course! it's wonderful fun - I'd argue over anything - even subjects I have no interest in at all. LOL. Stare them right in the face and confidently claim the most outrageous falsehood that just might be true. Priceless fun.

It's not a law, but from a practical point of view, an atheist won't be elected to office if he lack of religious belief is known. ALthough, Jesse Ventura was an atheist

kuresu,
Take out the philosophy class part (my high school didn't offer one) and you pretty much described me. I also grew up in SW Virginia, I am an Eagle Scout, and lets just say that I never got the God and County award in scouts. I was in the Martinsville area then. Now I am in Richmond, and my boss's wife tried to pry the Darwin Fish off the back of my MINI with her car key! How's that for a hostile work place? ~clpMINI I mean, this is America. Everybody loves seeing lesbians go at it, as long as they are both hot and not in a monogamous, legally sanctioned relationship.

Fortunately I’ve never lived in a society where I’ve felt the need to be mindful of stating my position and stance. I am more than happy to argue the toss with whomever I encounter.
I pity America, the so called land of the free, where Atheists need to so careful about revealing their ideology should they fall foul of victimisation from their peers or potential employees . Shame on you America.

Actually we've surrendered it several times in the past as it is. Specifically thinking about the 1820's with the first Great Awakening, fire and brimstone style. The one just prior to the 1860's was instrumental in triggering the Civil War (that and the fact there was a helluva alot of young people and man they started the first modern war with an estimated 700,000 deaths). 1920's saw the culmination of the fundamentalists again this time it was on prohibition, (see that one was pretty bad they got huge political power to pass an amendment). Uh then there was the 60's and Reagan era stuff.
Living for the temporal has always managed to win out. If the first 3 great awakenings meant anything. The fourth one, though i'm not so sure, they are just a little bit more organized this time it seems.

More seriously you do seem free to say and believe what you want . even if that mean not believing in any kind of god. and on the food thing... Mc Donnalds is nothing to write home about...... Edited by ohnhai, : No reason given.

Back in the 80s when I was in the US Army, they did allow me to have Panthiest on my dogtags for religious preference, however my roommate at the time was not allowed to have Satanist on his dogtags. This is despite his sincere belief system based upon the writings of LaVey. It made the news over here a couple of years ago when the Royal Navy offically recognised its first registered Satanist (who also based his belief on LaVey). Needless to say, some on the Christian Right weren't best pleased. Oops! Wrong Planet

I have often wondered if atheists here find it difficult in their locality to speak out as being a non believer in the general public or if they find that they are ostrasized by family or friends and just how they feel about that. No, I don't. In fact, the reverse is true. In England, you are much more likely to receive a negative response for coming out as actively religious than you are for either being apathetic about religion or actively not religious. I know this, because I've done both over the years. Edited by Mr Jack, : Stupid typo made sentence make no sense.
