jar asked:
quote:
Why can't planets form if gravity is greater?
to which jasonchin shouted out:
BECAUSE STARS BURN TOO QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!
If you would like, we can start a thread on this one subject.
Are you willing to discuss it?

Jar, on how quickly stars burn in higher gravity? Not really. Because if you make gravity too much greater than it is, and it stops becoming an issues.........because the universe collapses in on itself before any stars even form........make it a little weaker, and no stars form at all too.........that's why the universe is fine-tuned.

another lesson
All scientists? No, not all scientists believe that.......I was never implying that literally all scientists did.
Then you have to use words more carefully. If you read the primary scientific literature you will note that words are used carefully. YOu see things like "suggests" when the author feels that the evidence "proves". You see the use of "may" even when the case is rather stong.
When carrying on discussions you have to say what you mean. "All" is a risky word to use unless you really know what you are talking about.
You meant what you said. You were wrong. It would be appropriate to admint it.

fine tuning
Jason, some of us aren't explaining something to you very well.
"fine tuning" can be taken to mean that there is some room to "tune" the parameters. If the value of G, for example, can NOT be ANY other value then there is no "tuning" involved.
We don't, as yet, know if it is possible for these parameters to have other values or not. There are suggestions that this is the case and string theory, apparently, produces solutions that allow for it. But we do not know that yet.

You don't read enough science-fiction. Larry Niven proposed exactly such an ecosystem in one of my favorite books, The Integral Trees. In it, an ecosystem evolves in a toroidal gas ring surrounding a neutron star. It has enough air pressure due to the star's gravity to allow for human exploration.
Get specific here. How is the ecosystem supposed to have evolved?
BTW, it's a moot point anyway, because if I recall correctly the evolution of stars under high gravity would happen too quickly for any ecosystem to develop anyway, even if it did have planets.

Re: fine tuning
Ned, this is true......but this assumption still works well with Collins' hypothesis.

Bugs
There is, Jason, a technical problem in the software that seems to go off when there are more than 300 some posts in a thread. The whole thing will break and recent posts get lost if we let it go too far.
You response is not acceptable.
The only reason you are not restricted to boot camp is because you are a bit new here. You're being given a chance to smarten up before you actually get restricted.
You don't have much lee way left.
