Re: answers just lead to more questions
For me it is always gray, I'm not a big fan of black and white.

Re: Clarity, I suppose
Elena,
You said:
[...] it also seems rather unlikely that the big bang happened of its own accord. Just one day the universe said, "Hey, Im bored. Why not have a Big Bang?"
Aside from the question of what, if anything, caused the Big Bang, the way you portray it indicates that you have the wrong idea about the theory behind it.
The universe couldn't have said anything prior to the Big Bang, because it wasn't there. The Big Bang was when the universe first came into existence. In fact, one cannot even speak of 'prior to the Big Bang', because time itself, as an inalienable part of spacetime, was created with the Big Bang.

So what do you think is right, the model or the book?
Well, the model is supported by a weight of evidence, it makes accurate predictions, and has great explanitory power - in fact, it's often been described as the "unifying theory of biology."
The book is a collection of 2000-year old oral histories, filtered through some obviously excellent people-watchers.
Which one is right? They both are, within the limits of what they can be expected to be right about.
