Charles Knight brought up a good point concerning the fact that too many Christians are mere non questioning sheep who listen to the advice and ideology of their leaders. I have been on both sides of the fence in this debate. I ascribe to a certain code of religious teaching, but I am never afraid to question the rationale or the usefulness within my belief. Sometimes this puts me at odds with the church that I attend and in fact most churches. Do any of you believers or truth seekers find yourself at odds with the RULES?

I guess I'm at odds with the rules at christianity.com
I don't feel I'm at odds with the rules of God

This is more of a general reply than one to cp. What are these rules of christianity and rules of god?

i guess i'll replay to the other thread in here, since most of it's directed at phatboy.
Phatboy writes:
And when I throw jabs like that, please hit me upside the head with some kind words as you have done. The blessing destroys the curse!
funny, i thought i was being a smartass.
Phatboy writes:
you seem to agree with the God/Love concept from a heart level but that your educated mind has seen too much contradiction and inconsistency within scripture to blindly accept the Bible...and by extension the God of the Bible.
well, no. i made the educated decision to largely disregard the bible and its opinions of god. my faith is disconnected from tradition, yes. in that regard i've been called a deist.
i don't think of god as totally benevolent. i don't believe in him/her/it/whatever because i think it's a nice idea to have someone to love us. rather, i simply believe. i think of god as both good and evil, with the balance slightly tilted in favor of the good.
jar writes:
Is there a difference between rejecting the Biblical GOD and rejecting the Biblical descriptions of GOD?
i'm not sure. is there? because on one hand, the descriptions of god in the bible are very limited, it's one society's persepctive on godd (from a few differen groups) over a thousand years or so. they vary a lot within that, but start comparing it to other religions and there are huge differences. even from judaism to related religions, like christianity, islam, and lds.
jar writes:
If you look at some of the tales in the Bible and say, "Nope, those are not true descriptions but rather plot devices used to present a moral or message.", is that rejecting the GOD of the Bible or simply placing the stories in context?
not sure, but you've kind of hit the nail on the head here. i do sort of think of god as a plot device in most of the stories of the bible, particularly in the books of samuel on. god kind of disappears from a starring role. he's not even mentioned in some books, and compare those to genesis and exodus where he's a very important character.
so i'm not totally sure. i believe in god, and i think the bible is interesting. i think it might even hint at the god i believe in. so i don't know. like i said, i'm working this out.

10 commandments are the rules of God and the love Jesus spoke of.
christianity.com is simply interested in creating more followers not having intelligent conversation.
Although they may have good intentions.

i think he was refering to dogmatic rules of the organized religion, and why true belief often disregards them.

While Jesus spoke of love - I think the guy in the bible would be repeating his actions in regards to the money lenders and the temples.
What I can't understand is how many christians support people who are clearly lining their pockets.

Can you rephrase this? I don't get what you're saying.

cp writes:

You mean the following?
quote:
1-I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt...
2- You shall have no other gods besides Me...Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above...
3-You shalt not swear falsely by the name of the Lord...
4-Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy
5-Honor your father and your mother
6-You shall not murder
7-You shall not commit adultery
8-You shall not steal
9-You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
10-You shall not covet your neighbor's house (stuff)
Ok, so where does it say thou shalt go out and vote for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage?
And number 9 is violated by almost every creo I know, including you, cp. Everytime you guys present a strawman against the theory of evolution, you are bearing false witness.

in the sense that he would not be impressed how many have used the church to fill their own pockets and increase their power.

Grist for a different mill, Lam. Take that on down the road.

For it to be false witness they need to be consciously aware that it is false. Unless you can show intent, take that to the other mill as well.

I believe that is an important point.
IMHO, much of the New Testament is directed at the then existing Religious Bureaucracy. I believe the situation today would be one very familar to Jesus and that his reaction would be a significant dope slap across the back of many a televangelists head.
