Author Topic:   Open Question For Jerry Falwell (and those who agree with him)

I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'
-Jerry Falwell on 9/11
This question is for anyone who feels the same way Mr. Falwell does. If God is willing to slam airplanes into buildings to express his displeasure with homosexuals, then why is he not willing to, say, cause it to rain on the day of a massive gay pride parade?
I ask because yesterday was Chicago's gay pride parade through boystown, and a bright, balmy sunny day. Perfect parade weather, really.
So God's willing to take an active, murderous (or at least manslaughterous) hand in the fate of America because of our attitude toward homosexuals, but he won't whistle up a storm cloud or two to send everybody home when we come out to say "gays are ok"? I mean, c'mon... as far as discouraging people goes, there's a reason the phrase "rain on their parade" is a classic.
So what's up with that?

"Egos drone and pose alone, Like black balloons, all banged and blown
On a backwards river the infidels shiver in the stench of belief.
And tell my mama I'm a hundred years late; I'm over the rails and out of the race
The crippled psalms of an age that won't thaw are ringing in my ears"
-Beck

And were everyone in those buildings and airplanes supporters of gay rights? Or is this an example of our jealous and angry god throwing another tantrum and deciding to kill them all?
No wonder fundamentalists are so afraid of their god that they feel the need to use state power to enforce obedience to Biblical principles. If their god is displeased enough to wipe out the sinners, even they are liable to get caught in the cross-fire!

Shooting Fish In a Barrel
I remember hearing this after 9-11, and I always thought it was priceless. If I recall correctly, wasn't he talking to Pat Robertson at the time? Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. Anyway, it's a great example of how incomprehensible fundie logic is.
I guess we're supposed to believe that Falwell's Big Strong Christian God used Islamic terrorists to carry out His will. If that's true, why would Falwell consider it such a tragedy? And why would any American fundamentalist call for retaliation against the terrorists if in fact they were carrying out the will of the Christian God? etc. etc.

Esteban Hambre

Were it not for the ACLU, the idiot Falwell would not be in a position to make such stupid and absurd statements.
Thank GOD Jesus was not a Christian.

I dont intent to get involved in this thread as i dont care about Jerry Falwell and his views. My only involvement comes from post-1 which starts putting blame on God. Lets not forget that Falwell said the quote, not God. I do not like God getting a bad name for what man has done. In this case said.

I'm happy to differentiate between Falwell's God and your God for the purposes of this conversation. Heck, I don't think either of 'em exist anyway, so what do I care?
In the meantime, is there anyone who shares Gods with Falwell on hand who can explain why their God can level skyscrapers, but not bring some April showers 'round in June?

Moreover, why has Pat Robertson's house been right in the path of two hurricanes, which avoided the nearby cities he so often rails against as being sinful?

Don't Quote Me
We seem to have a believer with similar views among us. Just today, Lysimachus posted these words in the Bible Prophecy thread. I clicked it by mistake, honest.
Lysimachus writes:
God blessed America because it was founded on Christian principles (even though there were many unchristian principles intermingled). However, I want you to notice a trend. The more America begins to bring down the morals of this country, the more God's Holy Spirit will be withdrawn from this nation and will be less protected. As America continues to decline (i.e. by allowing gay marriages to finally take full sway nation wide), terrorism will begin to increase, and the security of this nation will begin to decline as far as providing the necessary security for this country. This nation will begin to rapidly decline, and it will be no longer a country of safety.
God is trying to tell America to wake up, but instead, are drifting away from moral principles. The more America drifts away from moral principles, the more you will see danger and insecurity increase.
So don't let anyone say that only rich televangelists can make ridiculous, homophobic, illogical pronouncements. The rank and file seem to be quite capable of doing so themselves.
regards,
Esteban Hambre

Re: Don't Quote Me
This is an interesting statement. So this nation was under God's protection when god-fearing white settlers were murdering Native Americans and stealing their land? Was this nation under God's protection when the North was supporting the South's institution of chattel slavery?
I suppose when there were no more free Indians to rob, and when slavery and Jim Crow was outlawed this nation was no longer acting according to good Christian principles. Funny that I can't seem to find this in the Gospels anywhere. But maybe Lysimachus can clue me into a better translation.

I must say I do not agree with Jerry Falwell.
It was a sunny day when the terrorists had their parade.
God doesn't do those things to us, he allows the devil to do them.
Read Job.

Some audio commentary about 9/11 and Christianity
This seems to be a good place to plug this in:
Titled "9/11 Warning", credited to "Wayne & Liz"
http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=17934&starttime=0:16:39
About 12 minutes long.
{Added by edit - Above cited is not joke material; I think there is some serious commentary there}
The show playlist is at WFMU: Scott Williams: Playlist from February 2, 2006
There are other things there that may interest you. The "Lila Laughs at the Monkey" pieces are George W. Bush speech sound clips with other overdubbed sound.

pagan point of view
interesting that pagans are to blame for the disaster that was 9/11. when the one and only rule that true pagans follow, is
"do as you will harm none."
thats it. Now last I checked slamming Airplanes full of people into buildings full of people is a rather decisive way of harming someone. No pagans did this act. we're a peaceloving sort. so jerry falwell and shove it up his right wing religios pain in my ass..... well ass...
