They thought "near" meant nearer than in fact it was, but it was nevertheless near then and it is even nearer now.
Why do I get the giggles every time I read this sort of thing? "Just a little while?" "Be patient, then, brothers?"
About 1900 years, Faith? Eighty generations? That's "near?" That's funny!

Yeah, I know it's odd, but that's how we have to read it. The end times began with the beginning of the church. The term "end" suggests something imminent, but it's been the end times all the last 2000 years, imminent or not, because it's defined by the finished work of Jesus. Nobody knew how long it would last. And as I said, "near" keeps one in a state of preparedness which is the real point, because nobody knows when the end will come.

Let me get this straight - God created the earth 6000 years ago and it's basically been the end times for the last 1/3 of that?
Wow - what a shitty designer.

Re: Less is more the second time around
I was merely pointing out, in my obscure, fun-loving way, that the second occurrence of the word "less" in schraf's sentence was meant to be "more":
I meant to take no position otherwise (there's one death out there for everyone, after all, and I don't see the pacing or means as theologically relevant), but I find your summary persuasive.
I finally post something that is detailed and somewhat persuasive instead of my usual smartass responses and it was all due to misunderstanding a joke.
I really need to take a break from this forum and get more sleep.

If obscure word play provokes responses as well done as yours was, I'll keep at it.

We have been in the end time since Jesus' day. But there is a special final period of several years that many refer to with similar wording. That is the last years of man's reign when all things will be fulfilled, and the antichrist comes.

Yes, that is the viewpoint of a certain form of christianity.
The 'prophecies' are so vaguely written it can mean anything.

I was told on a forum like this, by a no less dedicated evangelist that yourself, that said Antichrist was "coming out" in September 2003 in the person of King Juan Carlos of Spain.
He was wrong, too.

Ha. Well, that ought to encourage you to have some grip on the bible yourself, so you'd have known what the score was in a heartbeat.

No, they are precise. For example, the antichrist will stop the daily animal sacrifices of the Jews. When we see them, be aware the times are here.

You're making this stuff up, right? "Daily animal sacrifices of the Jews?" Why not "daily abominations with goats of the House of Representatives?" One is about as likely as the other to even start - PETA and the ASPCA won't stand for it!

Ha. No, I was serious.
Da 11:31 - And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
Da 12:11 - And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Reckon God will be able to outdo Hitler? Or are we only gonna see wrath on a Pol Pot kinda scale?
Surely He'll want to do better than third place - gotta overtake Stalin and Mao as well...

Re: Right on, Whisper
Like invading Jerusalem
A fascinating idea.
Who do you think is going to invade the capital of a country with one of the largest nuclear arsenals (along with associated delivery systems) on Earth?
The only candidates are those countries with comparable atomic weapons and the means to deliver them - currently this is probably limited to the US, Russia and China with the UK and France as very outside bets.
Since the US would almost certainly intervene if China or Russia looked like getting significant military assets in the Middle East (let alone in Israel itself) I guess what you are saying is that the Americans are going to elect the anti-Christ as their President sometime soon.
Odd that, I never thought Donald Rumsfeld was likely to run for President
