quote:What Brian has been is not being an ass. I tend to see the forum rules as traffic rules. Some are strictly enforced while others are more malleable. There are the passive drivers, agressive drivers, and the outright rude drivers. The outright rude drivers know the laws too well, so they know how to nitpick at others for little things that may push the laws a little. Technically speaking, they're not breaking any rule, but having them on the road is too much of a distraction for most other drivers. Now, imagine a cop. He is suppose to represent both the strict rules and the less strict rules. He is suppose to model what the ideal driver is, which is someone who doesn't necessarily obey the rules word for word, who sometimes can drive up to 5 or 10 mph above the speed limit, etc. These model cops use a combination of strict discipline and human understanding when dealing with regular joes like ourselves. Now, imagine a cop that is a know-it-all who happens to dislike certain types of drivers. He nitpicks at these types of drivers constantly, declaring them criminals everytime they mess up a little bit. This type of cop, while not breaking any rule, is a distraction to our highways. I see Brian as such a cop.

While admins joke from time to time of their alter egos and such, they are essentially the same people as their alter egos. I think the other admins saw it as a bad reflection on what an admin represents, even if the person in question hasn't done it in admin mode. What happens to cops when they are caught sniffing off duty?

I guess I should say something, because the speculation doesn't seem fair to Brian.
Brian hasn't done anything wrong in the public forums. There's a private issue under discussion in the admin forum on which Brian has some very strong feelings, and sometimes moderation is necessary even in the admin forum. Brian shouldn't have posted about a private matter to a public thread. I hope Brian's permissions can be restored soon.

I can say this--I just absolutely love glithces. Thank you, Admin, for moving my new thread, the Mag-lev one, to the coffee House. Unfortunately, not ony do I have six links to this same thread in my topics list, but I also have two different coffee house forums. If it's my computer screwing it up, which it may well be, how the heck does it get fixed?
ABE:I also see a grand total of four mag-lev topics by me, and only one is closed (maybe two?)(upon last check, all but one closed) in the original coffee house forum. those four, plus the one in the "new" coffe house, plus the one in the proposed topics makes for six. But that's quite some glitch, most likely thanks to my computer (known to sometimes be satan) ABE2:Here's te real kicker. I cannot post in the original coffee house, but I can in the "new" coffe house. This is just getting too wierd. Edited by kuresu, : No reason given. Edited by kuresu, : No reason given. The thread "the underlying assumptions rig the debate" is no longer there.
Is this a form of censorship? Someone here doesn't like the fact a persuasive argument has been made on my end and so gets into the system and deletes it? Edited by randman, : No reason given. Edited by randman, : No reason given.

How long have you been here? when have you seen that happen?
and em.. your thread is still there - which is the most convincing of all rebuttals..

In a thread about Brokeback Mountain Adminnemooseus writes to GoodIntentions:
We, the various admins, know that you are an alternative ID for another longer term member. This in itself is a significant forum rules violation, namely rule 9 (Do not participate as more than one ID). Most times when this happens, it's just a matter of leaving one ID behind and using the other one. You have gone far beyond that, however, as you had continued posting using both ID's. I consider this to be a severe violation of rule 8 (Avoid any form of misrepresentation). You are PERMANENTLY suspended and banned. Your ID and the ID of the other member will not be merged into 1 ID. The other ID will be revealed and dealt with later.
This was back in January just before I was in hospital for a while, so maybe I missed the revealing of the other ID (I've looked but can't find anything) and what action was taken. As I recall from the time it seemed a pretty good bet the other ID was lam. Never put off until tomorrow what you can put off until the day after

an official statement would be nice, sure. but look back a page or two in this very thread, and tell me you can't guess why he was suspended?

Checking membership info, Lam still shows up as a member in good standing. However, he has not posted since before the events you mention.
GoodIntentions also shows up as a member in good standing. This may be due to an amnesty extended to many users on the switch to dB2 software. However, it appears that his password may have been changed so that he does not have any way of logging in unless he first contacts an admin by email.

In my real life, I supervise departmental unix computers (computer science department). I have occasionally suspended a student as a way of getting that student's attention so that he/she will have a short discussion.
My best guess is that Admin was attempting to get Brian's attention, with respect to opening an email dialog. At least that's what the evidence suggests to me.

GoodIntentions and Lam are the same person, more or less arguing the opposing sides of the issue - A major forum guideline violation.
GoodIntentions was perminently suspended (or call it banned). This was intended to absolutely be a perminent suspension. Lam had a lesser suspension coming, but it seemed pointless to suspend him when he wasn't around anyway. I planned on revealing the GoodIntentions/Lam relationship when Lam returned and to then give Lam a shorter suspension (maybe up to a week, I don't recall if any length was ever decided). Well, Lam never returned so nothing further ever happened. By the way, this (Lam started, of all things) topic was intended for minor questions and not really for moderation issues discussion. The "General..." topic, link below, is the better place for moderation issues to go. This topic has also been used for minor side comments not relevant to other topics. Adminnemooseus New Members should start HERE to get an understanding of what makes great posts.
