The presence and significance of the two types of REPLY buttons isn't obvious, so newcomers often have problems.
Quoting Crashfrog from elsewhere:

Also if you use the little red-arrow "Reply" icon under the message you want to reply to, it leaves helpful little links under your message to show what you're replying to. Of course if you don't want to reply to a specific message, use the one at the bottom of the page.
The "little red-arrow reply button" also causes the production of other useful information. It is desirable that it be used, if one is replying to specific message.

For contracycle
Contracycle, I have noticed that you never used the "little red reply button", which is located at the end of individual messages. For the sake of tying things together, it is a good thing to use.
Please use the "lrrb" if you are replying to a specific message.
Thanks and cheers,
Adminnemooseus

Use the "edit" button, to look at this, or any other message containing quote boxes, to see how it's done. You'll be able to see it, but not actually do any editing.

YET ANOTHER BUMP

Newbee's, learn how to use the "little red arrow reply button".
Also, learn how to use the UBB code, for creating quote boxes. Perhaps the easiest way to see how this (or other coding things) are done, is to click on the "edit" button of a message (any message) that uses the code. You will see the text in the raw form. You won't actually be able to edit any message that wasn't your own creation.

Would you believe?...BUMP
This one's for Newborn.
Also, make sure you use the "little red arrow" button at the bottom of the message you are replying to, not that of some other message.

Re: Bump and a quote
Is there any way to add a "reply w/ quote" button that would start your new message with the one you are replying to already quoted for you?
Also, any easier way to change font size, color, etc, other than typing in the ubb code which you have to memorize?
I guess I am wondering if there is a way to make this BBS more like the PhBB systems I am used to. With the click on smilies, and selecting text and clicking on the bold or italic buttons.

The "reply w/quote" button was removed because of widespread abuse. The abuse took two forms:
  1. Some members would quote the message they were replying to in its entirety, whether it was long or short, and whether or not it was the immediately preceding message.
  2. When breaking up a quoted message into smaller quoted parts, some members either didn't use the preview button so that they could see if they'd done it correctly, or they didn't care when they hadn't done it correctly, resulting in a hash that made it impossible to tell who said what.
It might be appropriate to try an experiment. Messages are checked for improperly used UBB codes, and in the preview UBB errors are indicated in red. The software could be modified so as not to post any messages with UBB code errors. If members are willing to accept this change, then it might be reasonable to try re-enabling the "reply w/quote" button.
I guess I am wondering if there is a way to make this BBS more like the PhBB systems I am used to. With the click on smilies, and selecting text and clicking on the bold or italic buttons.
As this is a bigger change than I have time for, this could only happen if someone with the proper expertise wants to volunteer to make this change.

A bump for navajoeverclear
You seem to not be using the reply button that results in indicating who you are replying to.
Please review messages up-page, to learn the preferred method of replying to a specific message.
Thanks,
Adminnemooseus

I don't have the proper expertise. However, if I don't close a new contract this week I'm willing to try to learn and if I don't succeed then you can chuck whatever I do. What do you think?

Re: Bump and a quote
Sure thing! Good luck on the new contract, but if it doesn't come through let me know and I'll put a copy of the code somewhere where you can reach it.
The change you're thinking of tackling seems pretty major to me. There's a bunch of more minor bugs and enhancements, let me know if you'd like to follow a less steep learning curve and tackle one or two of those first.

Well okay, I can find both reply buttons, and know the difference...
... but how does one get a nice blue box around the quoted text? All I can manage is
quote:
this sort of thing.
Cheers, DT
