Re: BOINC, but ... note MAC and LINUX now carry all projects
Not sure what the installation problem is, but just to encourage people to try and migrate...
I'm seeing more than a 10% increase in the # of points / hour of run-time that I'm getting since installing the BOINC client. This isn't due to having both core's running--in fact, I should actually DECREASE # points/hour of run-time since the cores do share some resources and having them run simultaneously should make each core run slightly slower.
I'm hoping to see if others are able to install the client and to see if performance improves for you all as well.
AbE: Make that a 20% performance increase. Jumped from 34 points per hour to about 40 now (and that's on average, including all the pre-BOING stats). I expect it'll wash out to about a 25% increase just as far as EFFICIENCY is concerned, let alone the doubling of performance due to doubling run-time (since I'm running dual-core now).
Although my machine is fairly unhappy running at 60C ...
Edited by Ben, : update perf bump

Re: BOINC, but ... note MAC and LINUX now carry all projects
My impression was that BOINC was insisting on a login with password for user on the machine -- I don't use a password so it got confused
New trottle tool and default setting at 60% - newsletter article:
Enhance your preferences with the Throttle Tool
When running World Community Grid's agent for Windows, you will now see that 100% of the CPU is not used by default. World Community Grid has introduced a default setting of 60%. We've found that some recently designed computers deal with slight increases in CPU temperature (such as those caused by running at higher utilization) by slowing the CPU rather than speeding up the cooling fan as needed. This could cause a computer to run slower than usual. To keep this from happening, World Community Grid decided to reduce the grid agent's default CPU throttle setting so that the CPU does not heat up significantly. If you wish to change the CPU utilization setting, we provide a downloadable tool to do this. (This throttle feature is not yet available for the BOINC based agents.)
Looks like the same throttle mechanism as before, just with a GUI.
Now all I need is to get my laptop goinc again. Found the problem was some corroded spring contacts (copper spring hitting against aluminum ground plate, in a warm, moist salty air environment?), particularly where the wireless card slot was powered ... so I may need to hard wire them.

Statistics up to 1st. August 2006
This is the first of the monthly updates I said I'd do. I will generally try to do them on or around the first of each month.
Statistics Last Updated: 07/31/2006 23:59:59 (UTC) [1 hour(s) ago]
 Totals:
  Current Members 34 (#314)
  Retired Members 0
  All-Time Members 34
  Total Run Time (y:h:m:s) (Rank) 13:330:02:48:14 (#302)
  Points Generated (Rank) 3,003,258 (#318)
  Results Returned (Rank) 11,265 (#355)
Days since last update: 11
Total Run Time   309 -> 302
Points Generated 337 -> 318
Results Returned 367 -> 355
Still heading up the charts. We should break 300 in Run Time and be pretty close in Points Generated by next month.
Our progress should hopefully pick up slightly soon. I just discovered my Linux box - which runs 24/7 - hasn't returned any results for the last three weeks. Hopefully it won't be too hard to find out why and fix it...

BOINC is better
My impression was that BOINC was insisting on a login with password for user on the machine -- I don't use a password so it got confused
I think that part is just if you want to run it in server mode. It seems to run fine for me but you have to stay logged in to the machine, which I do anyway.
If you aren't using BOINC you really should. I received a new machine at work at the beginning of the Summer and it is dual core. I was running the UD client and was returning about 3 results a day. I installed BOINC yesterday and it started using both cores at the same time and has returned 9 results in 24 hours. Even counting only one core that is still 4.5 results per processor instead of 3 for both together. I'm also getting more points per result since installing BOINC.
The only "drawback" is that you only have a week to return the result. The reason for that is that every result has to be calculated by three different machines. You don't get credit for your results until two other people have returned the same result. If at the end of the week three results aren't returned the job is sent out again to a different machine. Eventually you will get credit but it can take a while. This is a problem for my installation on my laptop because I don't get enough time on it every week to even return a result and I hold up other people.

Re: BOINC is better
BOINC is better...
I don't think the point can be stressed enough. With the UD client, I was running at 31 points / hour of run time. With the BOINC client, I'm getting 51 points / hour of run time.
And that's not to mention that I doubled my run-time because I've got a dual-core machine as well. So not only has my run-time doubled because BOINC knows how to use my dual-core, my efficiency has improved--something which doesn't seem possible to be attributable to anything except the BOINC software.
I'd be interested for some people with single processors to migrate to the BOINC and see what differences in performance pop up.

I'm going to install it on my office machine - a machine I'm not going to be touching for 6 weeks and let it fly...
(plus we should get more uptime from my laptop over the summer).

Re: BOINC is better for OLD computers too
I'll have to watch for that
I also found this:
World Community Grid - View Thread - Boinc Agent?
There are still benefits to the BOINC package, even if only crunching WCG. It can stack jobs to run later ... without the extra need for UDMonitor. You can be uploading/downloading while the current workunit is running. The UD interface must finish the upload, download another and run a benchmark before the current workunit starts. One of my computers is old, and falls below the UD requirements. It can still run WCG projects in BOINC.

Re: BOINC is better
now on boinc: note turned off the UD agent that was running while installing boinc
single processor, fairly long track record on UD agent, so should be good comparison on results returned.
Here's my totals "benchmark" data:
Totals:
Total Run Time (y;d:h:m:s) (Rank) 1:025:04:42:46 (#8,516)
Points Generated (Rank) 193,092 (#12,424)
Results Returned (Rank) 411 (#26,815)
Averages:
Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day (y;d:h:m:s) 0:001:13:00:53
Avg. Run Time Per Result (y;d:h:m:s) 0:000:22:47:07
Avg. Points Per Hour of Run Time 20.61911
Avg. Points Per Calendar Day 763.20949
Avg. Points Per Result 469.81022
Avg. Results Per Calendar Day 1.62451

Of these the
"Avg. Results Per Calendar Day 1.62451"
is the critical one.
Here's my single device benchmarks

Agent Device Last Results Total Run Time Points Results
Type Name Returned (UTC) (y;d:h:m:s) Generated Returned
UD IT 08/02/2006 19:55:35 0:035:01:59:35 15,382 25
UD Desky 06/17/2006 00:01:28 0:091:07:08:44 40,493 54
UD Thoreau 08/02/2006 11:57:24 0:164:22:59:54 88,572 145

Where "IT" & "Desky" are my home computer (rebuilt once) and "Thoreau" is the work one. These run continuosly. The laptops have intermittent use and data would not be as reliable, although I will try boinc on one to see if it has less problems with it.
I will need to migrate my work machine on friday -- taking tomorrow off for a short 58 mile bike ride ... in the middle of a heat wave??? -- provided that I can use it with boinc and not have the performance issues I've had with UD that mean I have to throttle it down to 30% to do my WORK.
(such problems eh?)
Enjoy.

Throttles
I strongly advise using throttles on laptops to prevent overheating.
without BOINC:
from bob_grays link Message 235
- For Windows/XP
Open the Control Panel from within My Computer, and then open "System" within the "Performance and Maintenance" category . Click on the "Advanced" tab in "System Properties" and then click on "Environment Variables". Under "User variables for..." click on "New." Type in "wcgrid_max_cpu" (without the quote marks) as the "Variable Name". In the "Variable Value" field enter the desired CPU throttle percentage as an integer form 25 to 100. Any other values will be considered as 100%. Do not put the "%" character in the "Variable Value" field.
Then click "OK". Click "OK" on the "Environment Variables" window. Click "OK" on the "System Properties" window.
Repeat this setting for each user ID logging into your system, which runs the World Community Grid agent. Alternatively, the "System Variable" instead of "User variable...": can be set, which will enable this setting for all users.
with BOINC?
I seem to recall being able to set max cpu and max hard-drive use at installation, but can't find any way to modify it.
anyone know where that is?
