Can anyone explain the point of this cartoon? Is the author saying that anyone who uses the phrase "it is just a theory" in spite of the evidence must be drunk? I suspect it might be anti-evolution but I can't figure out how.

From the New Yorker?
Don't worry about it, it's not very funny.

I think the whole bar setting is not the point, it was just a way to line up the the evolution of 'us' from fish to the first land animals... to us. The point is even with the evidence literally staring them in the face, some people won't concede that evolution happens. This comic is definitly not anti-evolution.

Re: From the New Yorker?
I didn't think it was very funny either. It came from my father in an email and I'm not sure where he found it. I'm guessing it must have been the Washington Times.

Re: From the New Yorker?
It's not anti evolution. I read it as "there's so much evidence and people still don't believe it." Which is exactly what I think about God and creation. :/

Here's one easy to understand AND funny!
In fact, it'd make a great Picture of the Month. From the Sacramento Bee:
"I think younger workers first of all, younger workers have been promised benefits the government promises that have been promised, benefits that we can't keep. That's just the way it is." George W. Bush, May 4, 2005

That's freaking hilarious.

But wait, there's more!
Since this is the Coffee House, and the words 'evolution cartoon' are in the title, I suppose this would be as good a place as any to share a few more. Evolution can seem like such a dry subject, but thanks to the controversy there's endless possibilities for humor. First, here's one that references a different controversy, from ahajokes.com: from the Interesting Times blog: from the Humor in Science Department (hehe) at Southeastern Louisiana University: The file is hard to read. It says 'Science'. and, finally, from Fullerton College:
"I think younger workers first of all, younger workers have been promised benefits the government promises that have been promised, benefits that we can't keep. That's just the way it is." George W. Bush, May 4, 2005

Thanks for the insight
I think you and Tal are correct, the cartoon is not anti-evolution. And it really isn't funny at all. Now, some of berberry's are pretty damn funny. Also a good idea to use the thread to post cartoons.
