I started another thread so we can stay on topic. Taz, and a few others round here like to throw around the word racist. Especially with me. Yet, no one has ever provided any evidence of this, it's just what they feel(mere name calling is not a basis to be considered racist). Well, I started this thread to tell you, you are wrong. You are wrong on three accounts.
#1. I am not a racist (and laugh when you call me one).#2. Calling people racist, is wrong, unless they actually are. #3. Your own prejudice blinds you. From another thread:
"Taz" writes: Like Steve Blair? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20100604/ts_ynews/ynews_ts2425 Now, it's ok for him to make racist comments because he's got black friends. Just remember that he's got black friends, just like every freakin' racist out there. If I was a racists, would I date a black woman? Would I marry a Puerto Rican woman? You know, because I married a PR woman, I am one of them now, according to my racists ex-boss, and a few select others, who I would like to punch in the face. Taz, I may mention color when insulting, or putting people down, including white people, but that does not make me a racists. You have never once come up with one single shred of evidence that I am a racists. If I call someone a honky, white trash bitch, am I a racists towards white people? I am also not racists if I point out certain things that Obama does, and mention he is black. I am not saying he does certain things, just because he is black (even if he does) I would in a heart beat do the same thing if he was white. First off, I think he is part racist. he calls himself a black man, yet he is half white. I understand his skin color is black, and he has had to go through what a lot of black people go through, which IS racism. I see it all the time. But, I think it is still wrong to call yourself something your not. Makes me wonder if it stems from a hatred of white people, maybe from the way he was treated. Still, that should be no reason to hate, or be prejudice, or racist. He is also picking a lot of "minorities" to be judges, and what not. Seems like a little racial favoritism to me. But I don't have a problem with that, Lord knows it went on long enough with white people in office, it's about time the table turned a bit. A long time ago, and still today, I get treated bad by people of different ethnic back round, just because I am white. Not for any other reason. When I was a very small child, I made up my mind not to let that deter me from trying to get along with people of different ethnic back rounds. I love the difference in cultures, and embrace it open heartedly. I see no reason to be mad at all black people just because I was mugged by black people, in fights with black people, and called names by black people. I've seen the same behavior from white people as well, towards their own race, and towards other races. The color of your skin does not determine your heart. I would even say I get along with people of different ethnic back rounds more than white people. There is a comedian out there, that all he does is make racists comments, but he's not a racist. I will admit that probably both he and I should not make those comments, for two reasons. One, people don't understand because of their ignorance (you) and two, it is a bad influence on people that don't understand and are gullible. So I half apologize for any comments that could have been construed as racist. But on the other hand I don't, because where I'm from, and some of the people I hang with, we don't have a problem calling each other names. It's just names. What counts is how we treat each other. So I in no way have ever thought that white people are superior than any other race. In fact, I have seen too much of the opposite. (yet I won't classify based on just what I've seen) Do I believe that individual ethnic groups possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race? That's a pretty tough question. The short answer is no I do not. But white people, do mostly have white skin, and black people mostly do have black skin. But it's not 100%, and neither are any of the respectful races abilities, just because they are a certain race. But if I said on this forum, that the majority of NBA players are black, you would not hesitate to call that a racist remark, which BTW is not. For that you are wrong. Now if I said "all black people love basketball" that would be racist, and prejudice. However, there is no denying that certain things are more predominant in certain cultures/races. It has nothing to do with superiority or the lack there-of. And I do not hold that against, or for them. It's just life, that's all. I don't categorize people based on it. It's great that people have their own cultures, that do not stem from the color of their skin, just how they were raised. We all came from black mother Eve. We are all star bellies.

My take on racism.
A person is a racist if any of the following apply: Judging a person by: skin color, eye color, size, shape etc. religious belief sexual preference where his or her ancestors came from the persons sex. in other words if a person attaches a group name to any group of humans he is a racist. To be a non-racist he would have to agree that all humans are the same, which they are Homo sapiens Edited by bluescat48, : typo There is no better love between 2 people than mutual respect for each other WT Young, 2002 Who gave anyone the authority to call me an authority on anything. Sorry, riVeRraT, but that statement is either ignorant and stupid or it is racist. I won't judge which.
Here is some recommended reading on the topic.

Your predicament reminds me of my friend Bob.
Let me tell you about my friend Bob. He goes about carrying a bust of Karl Marx in one hand, and a red flag in the other, and he always wears a Che Guevara t-shirt. And then people think that he's a communist. But in fact he despises communism, and is a hard-line capitalist of the Austrian School. And so Bob gets all upset that people think that he's a communist. Just because he goes about behaving like a communist of the deepest dye, people think that Bob is a communist. Now, I have tried suggesting to Bob that if he doesn't want people to think that he's a Marxist, maybe he should give up carrying that bust of Karl Marx everywhere he goes. But you will find his reply most sensible and cogent: he explains that it's the fault of the rest of the world if they infer that he's a Marxist. Shame on them.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but the way I understand it, in order for one to be racist/a statement to be racist the person/statement has to be prejudiced against or for a race, nothing else qualifys.
I find your summary insulting on a multitude of levels. We are not all the same, to claim so is an ignorant proposal. Being 'color blind' is just another form if ignorance.

I find your summary insulting on a multitude of levels. None of which you are apparently willing to mention.
We are not all the same, to claim so is an ignorant proposal. And has nothing to do with what bluescat actually said.
Being 'color blind' is just another form if ignorance. And would also be another complete non sequitur. --- I'm guessing that since you are so angry and irrational and incoherent on the subject of race, you're a racist. 'Cos no-one but a racist needs to be so irrational and incoherent about this subject. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Well, I don't see how it is racist, would you please explain it to me, since I look to better myself, and understand why that would be considered racist. I really don't think I was being ignorant at all. Racism continues in this country today, and is still a problem. It shapes people when they are subjected to it. That's just a fact. Your link describes the "one drop rule" which I find to be racist. While researching your link, I came across this word which I haven't heard in a long time:Mulatto - Wikipedia I find it funny that in the definition it says: "Some reject the term because of its association with slavery and colonial and racial oppression, preferring terms such as "mixed", "biracial", "mixed-race", and "multiracial". Yet black people run around calling each other nigger all the time. They even make songs about it. Shit, they call me nigger too. But God forbid if I use the term.

This is something I've never understood either. If they think of themselves as "niggers", why is it wrong for me to refer to them as "niggers"? I know it used to be a derogatory term, but if they call themselves that, why can't I?

in other words if a person attaches a group name to any group of humans he is a racist. That doesn't make any sense. Noticing different and distinct characteristics doesn't make you a racist, it just means that you aren't blind. So saying someone is black, because they are black, isn't racist. You're a racist if you despise specific people based on their race and what their perceived negative attributes are. Of course it is racist. But "black" in not a biological term, it is a cultural term, and the one drop rule is what this racist culture goes by.

It does not seem at all racist when I am called a mathematician.
