Hello EvC friends! ...are there any of you still here who remember me? Jar? Asgara? Buzsaw? Moose? I see your names up there, so I guess you guys are still here I haven't posted here in a few years, but I was quite a prolific author on this forum back in the day ;-)
I stumbled back onto this site since I am currently having an email debate with a YEC, Dr. Charles Jackson, who spoke at my church recently. I've avoided the debate with other YECs in my church for several years now because it causes needless division and hard feelings, but when this guy came through, I had to speak up. I don't want my friends to have to go through the same kind of crisis of faith I went through simply because they were told you can't believe in the Bible if you accept science. He is allegedly a MENSA member with several degrees, but thanks to all the practice I had with you guys here ;-) I am totally destroying his weak arguments in debate.
But the main reason I'm posting is just to say "hi!" and catch up. (guess this could go in the Coffee House) I've been out of school for about 3.5 years now and working as an engineer for a company that packages natural gas compressors. It bores me to tears. At some point I'd like a career change... maybe as photojournalist. I started a blog just a few days ago: simcah.wordpress.com and have a photography website: simcahphotography.com
I've got a little house now with a little dog. I've had several different housemates... some have paid rent... most haven't. All have been interesting growing experiences... Unfortunately no hope of a wife is in sight yet. lol
My beliefs are still Christian. I'd like to think I've gotten a lot wiser, more humble, and less prickly with my opinions since the time I once spewed a little venom on here ;-) My political views have probably changed most since I last spoke with you all.
How are you doing, jar? Still enjoying South Texas? Asgara? Still queen of the universe? Hope you guys are doing well :-)

Hi Dawg. Hang in there sir. Long as you keep looking for answers to question all will be fine.

Sure, I remember you, though I don't recall whether we exchanged any messages.

That's good thinking.
I hope you hang around for a while.

Well done! And not surprising - people who cite their membership in Mensa are usually morons. It's funny how that works.
Not to say that you can't take the credit!

Yeah. I heard a talk a few months ago from a couple of people who'd set up a business consulting with makers of films and TV shows to check them for scientific accuracy.
One case they mentioned was a film where the two scientists in the script had met at a Mensa meeting.

Hi, Dawg. I remember you--we overlapped a bit in 2005-06. I see in your topic index you disappeared about the time of RobinRohan's death.
I think we clashed, but I don't remember specifics.

Hey Omnivorous, I don't remember if we debated or not. I argued for YEC for about 4 months while slowly coming to the realization my entire paradigm was being shaken to the core. After being forced to admit an old earth and evolution were "plausible theories" I lost interest in debating them and spent the next few months and years debating and philosophizing about God.

Yeah the instant I saw this guy, Dr. Glenn Charles Jackson, everything about him screamed "huckster!" I don't know, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt: maybe he is legitimately deceived and didn't quit his elementary teaching job simply because there's more money in being a traveling preacher against evolution. He went to several colleges around here talking about YEC and had a debate with an atheist evolutionist professor, who got angry at how "irrational everyone" was and walked out. Then he came to our church and preached a message on how if you believe in an old earth and evolution, you might as well be an atheist. This caused some of my friends to get very concerned about me... lol. For the 3.5 years I've been going to this church (which I really love!) I've stayed in the closet about my beliefs on this stuff because about 80% of them have been taught to believe in YEC. So when this guy came through, I was forced to "come out of the closet" and share how the very doctrine he is teaching is what caused me to have a crisis of my faith.
I sent him an email, which sparked off an exchange about the age of the earth. He wasn't making any good arguments and didn't even seem like he was trying. I asked him if I could share our emails on facebook with my friends and he said no.... I had already done this, but since he said no, I pulled it off Facebook. Then he wanted to meet and talk in person. I said, that's cool, but we're not going to settle anything that way. We're not experts, so we need time to analyze and research an argument before responding. We wouldn't get anywhere by just talking about it. So he wanted to continue the email debate. Right now we're talking about "are radioactive decay constants really constant?"
Anyways, maybe something good will come of it.

Too funny.
Think about any of the many radioactivity caused halos. They are complete rings, in fact complete spheres created by a succession of decay events. In reality they are made up of lots and lots of dots that are located at the point of farthest travel of the decay particle. Since the distance that the particle travels is a function of its energy level and that the points form a shell around the initial source and that each point is equi-distant from the source, the energy level and decay rate remained constant.
