Well frankly I find you scarey. You seem to write everything that a more intelligent Straggler would have written if he had just thought of it first. There I am pondering away. Then all of a sudden: (**Lightbulb Moment**). And then just as I am writing my incredibly eloquent and oh so logical and evidenced argumant I look at what has been written in the meantime and.....Doh!! That blasted Rahvin has got there first.
I hate you
Keep up the good work.

Ha! I'm just blunt and not afraid to make people feel uncomfortable. Works against me pretty often, actually, as it drives debates into off-topic discussionsof what made my opponent uncomfortable rather than the topc.

I actually feel rather the same about you - your posts are often what a calmer, more focused me wishes I had said. And your patience in the RAZD debates has been nothing short of superhuman, while still holding to a logically consistent and well-written chain of responses.
I hate you
Keep up the good work.

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
A) Hardcore creationist
Buzsaw: The man has his beliefs and sticks to them, but seems to be open-minded enough to accept other possibilities. I think for all intents and purposes he is a fair man and believes deeply in being equitable. God has transformed his life and he serves to honor his God every chance he gets. He has a lot of character and history at EvC, and somehow it wouldn't feel like home without him.
B) Pragmatic believer
Phat loves the concept of God and I think it was there for him during some turbulent times. He's always willing to look at the how's and why's of his own faith and isn't afraid to free God from being compartmentalized.
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
Modulous is always an even-keeled, reasoned debater who tackles any issue objectively. His reasons for disbelief are valid only because he sifts through an argument carefully, not from some preconditioned and irrational hatred for all things God.
D) Rampant atheist
That'd have to be you, Straggler. You remind me a lot of Modulous in many ways. You have a great sense of humor, reasoned responses, well articulated and thought-out reasons why atheism works better than agnosticism or theism. You carefully detail your analysis and aren't moved by vain arguments.
(E) Open-minded skeptic
The fact that I honestly don't know what Percy's personal beliefs entail, only solidifies this nomination! A very mellow man who seems to have given a lot of thought to anything he says, he always is gentle with his approach and allows the facts to speak for themselves, rather than getting personal. He seems willing to listen to and analyze anything presented to him. He is not given to popular demand, but simple, unobstructed logic.
(F) A category on his own:
Legend is a legend in my book. He does not come here as often as a regular, but he and I seem to think a lot alike concerning social issues when he does. What makes him unique is that you could not categorize him as being anything other than Legend. He is one of those nuanced fellows who simply examines the evidence for what it is and isn't afraid of ruffling a few feathers.
(G) The third side of the argument
Purple Dawn is ferocious and yet gentle in her approach. She will force an opponent to stick with the argument and disallows derailments and off-topic nonsense to detract from her points. She cares not about speculation, but reasoned responses. You simply have to respect that kind of dedication.
(H) Horse rider (and dead horse flogger)
While I have someone in mind, my mother once told me, "If you have nothing good to say about someone, say nothing at all." I plead the 5th on this one.
(I) Most missed:
I miss a few people, but Mike sticks in my head. While he is still here to some degree, he doesn't come out to play as much any more. I always enjoy a good conversation with him.
Edited by Hyroglyphx, : No reason given.

"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." --John Adams

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Good choices!! Especially your nomination for the "Rampant Atheist" category Here are my choices.
A) Hardcore creationist
I think Arphy is an interesting newcomer in this category. A category which generally has a dearth of worthy contenders. Arphy seems interesting from what little I have seen of him. Alas I have been too embroiled in other nonsense to pay much attention to this category. I would also like to give Buz a nod as the most welcome returner. As maddening as I find the old coot it wasn't the same without him.
B) Pragmatic believer
I agree with your choice of Phat in many respects but my own personal favourite is Bluejay. Never afraid to challenge his own beliefs and someone who has taught me a lot. I feel genuinely enlightened about why people believe because of Bluejay (amongst others but he stands out) and it has indisputably softened my attitude to faith in my time here (believe it or not)
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
Yeah Modulus. For all the reasons you cite and more. Having actually met him I can also say that my respect and admiration for his reasoned approach to this whole thing has been amplified by the fact that I genuinely like him as a real person. I know real contact!! Radical and unheard of.
D) Rampant atheist
Rahvin. As discussed. But if I could be the EvC equivalent of a Mod/Rahvin hybrid I would die happy. Alas I feel that this is an unrealistic expectation as I am not intelligent, rational or reasoned enough to ever be that. So I will continue to be the black and white one eyed mutant with delusions of aspiration.
(E) Open-minded skeptic
Yeah Percy is a good choice. For many of the same reasons as Bluejay but not. If that makes any sense to anyone but me.
(F) A category on his own:
I can see why you chose Legend. You and he are worthy adversaries in the social forums where I disagree with you both on most issues. But I would suggest dwise1. For reasons that I cannot explain. Just read his posts and work it out for yourself.
(G) The third side of the argument
Otto Tellick for me. Alway different whilst always sane.
(H) Horse rider (and dead horse flogger)
Me. And RAZD. For reasons obvious to any regular here. I say this with self depricating humour in mind. But if I really believed that I would just stop. I think we are making progress. I think we are having an interesting debate. Yeah yeah I know I am an irrational and deluded optimistic fool. So sue me.......
(I) Most missed:
I would have said Iano but he has made a recent comeback. I would love the chance to debate with Jar now that I am less of a newbie than I was when I had the opportunity.
Some other categories:
Most Ignostic: Mr Onifre "What exactly do you mean by god" Perez. had to get a mention. Because he makes me laugh and keeps us all grounded with his ability to cut through pompous bullshit.
Most Insulting To Me Personally: Catholic Scientist. But all is forgiven Amen.
He who dares wins: Lyx2no for taking on the mantle of his predecessor with great aplomb.
I could think of many more.........

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
I would agree with all the people mentioned so far. I just wanted to butt in with yet another category...
Often no matter the category I make a point of reading certain peoples posts. I think it has much to do with their style or as modulous (i believe) once put it wordsmithing.
Percy, Modulous, and Rhavin. Also Lyx2no and Dr. Adequate, they are usually making a point but in odd ways and I often laugh until I cry.

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Ah yes "wordsmithery". Good category and good choices to fill it. Dr. A is def worth a mention in this category for the ability to make the biggest point in the fewest words on a regular basis.
And further to the "Most missed" category I would like to nominate Kerusu. Where is the shaggy blond these days?

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
A) Hardcore creationist
Buz is fun, ICANT is probably the most frustrating.
B) Pragmatic believer
Brotha Bailey is my personal fav since we share a love for classic guitar. Don't see him much these days though. Bluejay is runner up.
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
Definitely Mod, the rest of the disbelievers let emotion get involved in their/our opinions.
Bluegenes was pretty badass in his debate with RAZD.
D) Rampant atheist
Rahvin and you too, Christopher.
Some of the new guys like Hooah are pretty vicious about it, too.
(E) Open-minded skeptic
How can it be anyone other than the only true non-psuedoskeptic in this forum?
(G) The third side of the argument
I personally like Jazzns, obviously in the social threads. Also, Hyro in these threads always has an intereting perpective.
(F) A category on his own:
Catholic Sci takes this one. His beliefs are almost contradictory, but he finds a way to make it not so. Plus, like you, I feel he can insult me and I'm totally cool with it.
(I) Most missed:
That long haired liberal is greatly missed in the social threads.
Most Ignostic: Mr Onifre "What exactly do you mean by god" Perez. had to get a mention. Because he makes me laugh and keeps us all grounded with his ability to cut through pompous bullshit.
This brought a cynical tear to my eye.
He who dares wins: Lyx2no for taking on the mantle of his predecessor with great aplomb.
I hate to sound insensitive, but I think its the same dude.

I'll take that as a compliment
I am a Gemini, and some of my beliefs do contradict each other. I see things from both sides and they both seem true
/shrugs... what am I gonna do...
He who dares wins: Lyx2no for taking on the mantle of his predecessor with great aplomb.

The original lyx2no died and the current one is his nephew, IIRC.
From the bio in his profile:
quote:
I am the second in a long line of lyx2nos. The first was my uncle, Boko. He died after a long illness on Oct 31, 2008. I took over the post after inheriting this computer. I am a 10th grader in a Catholic school. My mum is a strict Catholic and cries constantly that I'm going to Hell. That makes me giggle, so maybe I am.
I remember a thread from the executor of his will announcing his death and asking if there was any unfinished business here or something like that. I couldn't find it though.

Most definitely!
You're beliefs remind me of Ken Miller's beliefs and how he expressed it in his book "Finding Darwin's God" - which is what I think you've done - found a way to incorporate science with your faith. You and Bluejay both have this quality (and others but you two are the ones I'm most familiar with).
The original lyx2no died and the current one is his nephew, IIRC.
I know, I remember also. But if you notice the writing style and word usage from then and now is almost identical. The same knowledge on the same subjects, and at the same level. That's why I said I think its the same dude.
However, this could just mean his uncle(?) taught him every single thing he knew, and how to debate in the exact same manner. Suspicious to me, but that's cuz I do a lot of writing and have a ken eye for picking up on similar writing styles - which I could be totally off on.

Pfff, you're just jealous because you didn't get one.

I hunt for the truth
I am the one Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My image is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

Pull yourself together man! You'll be giving us a tearful acceptance speech at this rate.
I thought the social forums were under-represented so here are a few more categories for those with no life to contemplate (along with my own thoughts):
Loony Leftie: I am unaware of any hardcore socialist members but would love to hear from any who consider themselves as such.
Pragmatic Liberal: I am gonna say Rrhain. (***Blink***) Yes I did just say that!
Social Randomite: You Oni. Not that your views don't form a coherent whole. Just that you don't tend to always fall into the Lib/Con dichotomy as easily as most. So one for the aluminium hat brigade. How are those conspiratorial tendencies by the way?
Pragmatic conservative: Probably Hyro. Interesting and articulate. But I suspect we are destined to disagree.
Rightwing Nutjob: I personally think Legend has his moments. Buz is a prime contender for his crazed Obama views. But the true loon here is Artemis Enteri.

Re: Social Categories + General Banter
Loony Leftie: I am unaware of any hardcore socialist members but would love to hear from any who consider themselves as such.
I'm often considered to be one, though I don't necessarily see myself as one. Comes from being in America, where the right/left spectrum is significantly shifted rightwards compared to our neighbor to the North and Europe.
I favor lots of "socialist" policies like socialized police, socialized fire protection, socialized education, and socialized healthcare. I support welfare and unemployment protection such that, combined with the other socialist programs, every citizen is guaranteed at least a minimal standard of living and, while they would lose a fancy house or a nice car, unemployment would not mean life on teh streets and getting sick would never result in choosing between bankruptcy or death.
I favor government regulation but not control of industry, as I believe that Capitalism works best when given boundaries, because corporations and indeed regular folks are basically greedy little children looking for ways to cheat the rules to get more for themselves, and damn the consequences later. I think the government should have nationalized the worst offending banks, and divided up everything that was considered "too big to fail." Control of the nationalized banks could be transitioned back to private ownership after the economy stabilized.
I don't mind high taxes...so long as I believe the money is being spent wisely and efficiently.
These things tend to get me labeled as anything from a socialist to an outright communist or fascist, which amuses me to no end for the inherent contradiction in those terms.
The reason I don't see myself as so terribly "left-wing" is because I'm a realist - I favor those programs that work, and don't favor that which does not work. My goal is basically an increased standard of living for everyone, which is most effectively obtained by helping those who are in the most trouble. I support things that are very unpopular with many segments of the left, like nuclear power, which I see as the best and most effective solution to our environmental and energy concerns, if it's done correctly (the US currently doesn't allow "breeder" reactors, which means we don't reprocess our spent fuel. It's a gigantic waste of energy, and results in large amounts of unnecessary waste. We could also use Thorium rather than Uranium for the nuclear cycle as well - Thorium is much easier to acquire than Uranium, there's more of it, and it can't be directly weaponized, and it still supports fuel reprocessing).
