I've been guilty of this from time to time. Using colors in formatting is easy; but too much is distracting. The latest, however, is awful. This is RAZD's new
... maroon ...
quoting convention -- it is starting to hurt my eyes. Yowzah! What's wrong with the usual [qs][/qs] blocks?
I've been known to use a different color from time to time; but I've tried to go with colors that match the rest of the site. I've done this for text I've added in a moderator edit, for example. I sometimes use the wheat color, or perhaps a light green. But too much fun and games with formatting detracts and upsets normal reader expectations in the site color scheme, IMO. It is unnecessary if you are already using a quoting box.
Just a rambling thought on a Sunday evening... at least you know I'm reading your posts.
Cheers -- Sylas

I agree. While it isn't difficult read like Darkstar's formatting was, it is not pleasant to look at. As the saying goes, "Just because you can doesn't mean you should".

OKAY. drab it is ... again ...
The purpose is to distinguish quotes from one author from those of others - the colored background was for the person being responded to while other qs boxes are used for other sources (like articles that refute the position of the author)
the "maroon" is an "in" joke (for those who have watched too much bugs bunny ...)
and I guess you didn't see the red and green solstice post ...

Is there ever a legitimate use for changing the background colour? I don't think so; why then support it at all?

Yes. when pasting something in like a gif image with dark lines and transparent background, you won't see the image unless you can make the background light.
Why have any formating options at all if all you want is uniformity?
I don't live in a black and white world. Color can be used for emphasis.

I know; they seem like right-wing Christians, don't they?
Seriously, I thought the alternative formatting was amusing. I would never have dreamed that it would still be under discussion days later.

Colors got rights too!
yes, a very conservative reaction, and it wasn't even a liberal use of color ...
you would think I was intentionally trying to be a royal pain.

RAZD, you an LSU fan? I read an LSU forum that's ALWAYS formatted exactly as your snippet. It's pretty horrendous. Even worse is that I pay for the right to ruin my eyes there.
