I sincerely meant that you do have integrity, based on what little we've been exposed to each other here.
What people without integrity do is try to profiteer off of individuals like this. If what's written here is true, the man would seem to be guilty of crimes. Why are the laws not enforced? Common process in America: pass gun laws, but don't enforce them. When school shootings and other high profile crimes occur, pass more gun laws. Wash, rinse, repeat... until all guns are outlawed. I see the potential for the same thing here. There are child abuse laws, and they're not enforced. So more child abuse laws will be passed if the pattern holds. Wash, rinse, repeat... until the "law" says everything is child abuse and the government is ready to break up all families at will. Will you advocate eugenics if it gets to that point? What right do parents have to pass on "defects" to their children?

I do appologise: I mis-read your statement thinking you were criticising Phelps, not the flim maker.
I would like to echo Dr A's comments and add that if you have not watched the documentary you are in a poor position to make comment. Phelps and his clan are visible delusional and he is a mean old bastard who likes hurting people. Any action that gets people to see what can hide in a counrty is worthy of praise. Their kind of spite filled vitriol would never (thank fuck!) take place in UK now because we have laws to prevent such hate.

Taz' link in post 14 to ABC is an example of how the professionals cover such things. (Although his conclusion that this is 'child abuse' requires an unacceptable definition.) See the difference? The right way to report on these things is not to go stir up a confrontation. It strongly implies that left alone, these people wouldn't do anything noteworthy. There is no question of objectivity on the part of the "reporters" in these cases, they tell everyone right up front that they never had any.

It can help in situations like this... Attention Required! | Cloudflare - Phelp's own site - check it out, you may like it

Did I make that up? No, you didn't make that up, that is what the article actually says. It does not say that Theroux "is trying to undermine parents' relationship with their children". You made that up.
It's not a matter of defending Phelps. He is innocent until proven guilty. I did not see the show, so I don't know what he's accused of doing. Another falsehood. You know exactly what he's accused of doing, because I quoted his childrens' public accusations of his abuse, and I quoted Fred Phelps himself. According to his children, he has subjected them and his wife to violent criminal abuse: and according to Phelps ... well, dammit, read what he wrote. Is that really less disgusting than the false accusations against Louis Theroux which you dreamed up in your head?

What people without integrity do is try to profiteer off of individuals like this Erm.....who cares if that's even true - it's like complaining when a policeman steals a spud from a murderer's kitchen. Even if what you say is true - that there are opportunists, we all know that about the press anyway, so how is it even relevant? Does it mean that Phelps didn't say the things he said? Or that these people aren't filled with hate-filled whacko-rage? No - so who cares if Theroux done his job by getting the truth out of these people? I've seen many of Theroux's weird weekends, and such - he is generally a normal guy, albeit with that obvious intention to produce the goods, because he's a journalist. He pursues people with abnormal views, but he's open-minded. Yes - he wants a story, but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Fu** me - Phelps drank the lake! Atleast watch the clip provided on the link I gave. Theroux doesn't need to do anything - their prejudices are clear.

Is that true, or is it something you made up in your head? Please quote where Louis Theroux "told everyone right up front" that he has no "objectivity". Edited by Dr Adequate, : No reason given. You say that the laws against child abuse are not enforced. You conclude from this that one day the government will one day use these laws to "break up families at will". Don't get me wrong, I like mind-altering substances, but I do not want a puff of whatever it is you're smoking.

Had a look at Phelps' website.
In the space of time it took me to cut and paste the hit count went up to 5487346. Now it's 5487351. What a fucking disgrace!

The right way to report on these things is not to go stir up a confrontation. Thats exactly what he did. The only confrontation on the show was when Phelps was asked ihow many children he had. Then he became defensive and left. Louie quietly left. No stiring, just questions. This Phelps guy is obviously personality disordered, judging from his moral rigidity and need for adulation, perfectionism and obedience he has displayed. And I say that in a professional context.

Phelps is but a Low Hanging Fruit, easy pickins. But the positions he espouses are actually very widely held in the US. Listen to the 700 Club, to Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Dobson or any of the TBN, CBN, GLC or Sky Angel offerings.
While the Phelps family is loud, crude and obnoxious, it is small and really ineffective. It has never been able to garner any real support. On the other hand, the exact same message is carried by the people like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson and they reach many millions and have many millions of followers here in the US. First of all, I could have sworn I wrote a response last night but for some reason I can't find it in this thread. Anyway, here it is again.

There are a couple reasons I can think of. The crimes were committed many years ago and now there are not enough evidence and none of the abuse victims have officially reported to the authority.

The second amendment is one of two amendments in the bill of rights that were not selectively incorporated into the 14th amendment. I honestly don't know what you are saying when you said "all guns are outlawed".

You overly liberal use of the slippery slope is getting old.
Will you advocate eugenics if it gets to that point?
No, but I do advocate lisencing people to breed.
What right do parents have to pass on "defects" to their children?
Don't get me wrong, I think parents should have every right to pass on whatever the hell that's wrong with them to their children. The question is are these good parents? If I know for sure that if I have a child the child will have a 70% chance of dying a very slow and painful death at an early age of a hereditary disease, am I a good parent for pumping out one child after another just to satisfy my need to feel like a real man?

Plenty to be disgusted with. I see this misguided man is even being exploited by the local politicians. Safe bet they'll keep hyping him for as long as they can. I can't help wondering if, with sufficient publicity, one could run for governor on an anti-Phelps platform. I've about had my fill. Unsound doctrine, mutual hate, corruption, bombing... my interest has run out.

There's no surprise at all that they're angry. What's surprising is that they put up with such a situation for three weeks. But he probably approached the children "on the sly". It's not a matter of defending Phelps. He is innocent until proven guilty. I did not see the show, so I don't know what he's accused of doing.
