So...
When you tell people how awesome you are at developing discussion board software, are you also going to explain how good of a babysitter you have been? Science fails to recognize the single most potent element of human existence. Letting the reigns go to the unfolding is faith, faith, faith, faith. Science has failed our world. Science has failed our Mother Earth. -System of a Down, "Science" He who makes a beast out of himself, gets rid of the pain of being a man.-Avenged Sevenfold, "Bat Country"

Hi Percy,
All participants in all threads are asked to follow the Forum Guidelines, including rule 10: AND including rule 4:
4. Points should be supported with evidence and/or reasoned argumentation. Address rebuttals through the introduction of additional evidence or by enlarging upon the argument. Do not repeat previous points without further elaboration. Avoid bare assertions. I'd like to see this rule applied to each of the assertions about my position as posted by **** ... and any time he mentions my name.
It's on the todo list. Last time I checked I was still only one guy. Ah, but what a guy... (I can wait). I second the motion; see Message 199 where I felt a need to say these things for the second time in the thread. Have a look at the responses I got. Please also have a look at Message 202 by a different poster, thanks. I'm not deliberately trying to wind people up but it seems I stepped on some toes.

WTF????
What pray tell are you accusing me of? We have a difference of opinion. You insult my intellect numerous times because I do not agree with your philosophical look at life. Then you use condescension. Now you claim I am a problem? I see nothing but an attempt at healthy debate on my part while you continue to evade. Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

...and anyone else who's frustrated.
First, to LindaLou, your tendency in the past has been to carry on through many posts without taking much notice of the substance in what others are saying. I can't tell if this is true in How does one distinguish faith from delusion?, I only read the last couple pages, but even if you prefer not to admit to this tendency I still ask that you try to be cognizant of the possibility. To Theodoric, I can step in and make rulings, but I have a feeling you're not really interested in that since it wasn't you who raised a complaint. Another possibility would be to allow the rhetorical parries being sent your way to challenge you into offering equally effective ripostes. Or to move to a boxing analogy, your arguments may possibly have more punch, but they're being overwhelmed by a flurry of rhetorical (and possibly irrelevant) combinations. Both Jimmy Carter and Rush Limbaugh tell similar growing-up stories of taking one side in formal debate and winning, then switching sides and winning again. Debate is a skill. Each side should, if sufficiently skillful, be able to identify the fallacies from the other side and turn them to their own advantage while still managing to stay on topic. Naturally this requires ignoring the emotional response one gets (or at least I do) when they've just been zinged and to instead respond clearly and logically. We have several good examples of this ability here, I won't embarrass the guilty by naming them. But one thing I must insist upon - please follow rule 10 of the Forum Guidelines, treating others respectfully. I know this places those less skillful or at least less interested in the sly insult at a disadvantage, but such is life.

Well I have always been a heavy bag type of guy. Subtlety of a sledgehammer. But I guess everyone had figured that out about me.
The only reason I responded on this thread to LL was that I had no idea what her complaint was bout. I guess my ripostes are a little less sophisticated, but the condescension gets a little irritating.

I would also like to note the effect of one person making multiple responses to single posts - if you have something to say, you can say it in one post.
Multiple posts are a form of badgering rather than proper debate: if you don't reply to some they accuse you of avoiding the issue, and if you respond to each one you are soon dominated by responses to one person rather than others on the topic. Once or twice may be okay, but when it becomes a common pattern every time, then it is troll like behavior and it should be avoided and discouraged. Thanks.

quote: I've taken this on board all right -- it's the reason why you banned me. I've been making conscious efforts to make sure I respond directly and I thought I was doing well in the thread in question but I'm open to people's opinions on that. It is weirdly ironic that I'm complaining about someone doing the same thing with me, though RAZD has noticed the same tendency in the poster for some time. I'm trying to take it as an example of what I should not be doing myself. It's getting tricky because that thread is getting flooded with posts and I'm going on holiday for a few days; I'm simply going to have to be selective about what I reply to, I don't see any other way.

I 3rd the motion.
See Message 252 Ignored most of what I said and repeated his position with no further evidence. Quite annoying in the least.

Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but here goes.
When I look at the bottom of the post to see which message has been replied to (This message is a reply to: ). The message number that is displayed is the same as the message number of the post. For instance if there is a post in a thread that has number 17, which is a reply to message 12 it will actually read: This message is a reply to:Message 17 by (whoever posted message 12) This is on IE by the way, no idea if other brwosers have the same issues. I hunt for the truth

The thread has turned into another absolute and relative morals discussion despite attempts to get it back on track.
Personally, I think EMA is playing games. Thanks

To Purpledawn - These theological and/or philosophical situations are tough for the science minded admin staff to deal with. I had hoped that you, the master of moderation skill that you are, would be successful in properly guiding the discussion.
Hopefully, just the fact that you posted your "discussion problem" message has had a positive influence on the discussion nature. To EMA - I point out to you that Purpledawn is a retired admin here at this forum. This retirement was NOT because of any deficiency in AdminPD's moderation skills. Indeed, I am of the opinion that her such skills were outstanding, even relative to those of the still active admins. But, it was decided by Percy/Admin that the forum needed to simplify it's moderation team down to a much fewer number of admins. Thus many admins of various skill levels were retired. I am somewhat mystified that I was not included in the retired list. Short version - I have the highest regard for Purpledawn and her methodologies. I suggest that if you find that she is making some sort of objection about topic procedures, you strongly consider that she is probably right. That's how I see it. Other admins may see it differently. Adminnemooseus New Members should start HERE to get an understanding of what makes great posts. Report a problem etc. type topics:

Forum Guidelines Admin writes:
It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon. There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot. Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots.
