I even like some black gospel, Some? Most is great. Particularly if you can get a chance to visist the LOC. They have many of the old recordings that were made during the WPA projects in the 30's. Lot's of them have never been compiled or released. Back when I was in High School we used to make pilgrimages down to DC to spend the day listening in their little booths to some of the music. It's simply amazing. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

I heard a single from the new NIN.
Pretty bland. Loud and thick, but no dynamic range. I always thought that Reznor's genious and power was manifested best when he juxtaposed his whispery, tortured, whiney lyrics with nothing but a beat behind them with the crashing, jangley, electronic wall of sound. I hope the rest is better than the advance single.

Hm... Dan's slobber-over-them-gleefully albums, in no particular order:
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes AroundBeck - Mutations Beck - Odelay Elvis Costello - My Aim is True Elvis Costello - This Year's Model The Clash - London Calling The Beatles - Revolver Jurassic 5 - J5EP Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs vol. 2 Talking Heads - Remain in Light The Pixies - Doolittle The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God The Police - Synchronicity Frank Zappa - Strictly Commercial REM - Document The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust I'm sure more will occur to me. (Edit: for instance, Schraf's post just reminded me of Pretty Hate Machine.) I also listen to Franz Ferdinand and the Flaming Lips an oddly high amount, but wouldn't put them on the above list of involuntary-orgasm music. CRAP! Edited in, because I knew stuff would occur to me later: The Shins - Oh, Inverted WorldBen Folds Five - Whatever and Ever, Amen John Cale - Paris 1919 Stevie Wonder - Talking Book Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death This message has been edited by [Dan's Clever Alias], 04-12-2005 09:08 AM "You can't expect him to be answering your prayers when he's not real, can you? I even like some black gospel,
Jar might have heard the John R show on Sunday nights from some AM station in Nashville, ca. 1968. He had soul/R&B the rest of the week, but gospel groups like The Southern Hummingbird on Sunday. And he was a great DJ - "For all of you out deah in radioland slippin' it in and slippin' it out - get White Rose Petroleum Jelly!"

John R, Hoss Allen & Gene Nobles. There was also WWVA out of Wheeling WEST By-GOD Virginia. And DC hosted several great Jazz and R&B stations.

I heard a single from the new NIN. Pretty bland. Loud and thick, but no dynamic range. they're going for something a little different this time around. the fragile was pretentious art rock, and very diverse. they're more for coherence, energy, and simplicity right now. also, if you've only heard the radio rip floating around the net, it sounds much better than that. and what i've heard from the rest of the album puts it sort of on par with the downward spiral.
I always thought that Reznor's genious and power was manifested best when he juxtaposed his whispery, tortured, whiney lyrics with nothing but a beat behind them with the crashing, jangley, electronic wall of sound. what i've heard of the new album is sort of like that, only focusing more on tonality and atonality. for instance, in "the line begins to blur" it starts with the wall of noise/modified industrial beat, and slowly develops a melody toward the bridge. but yeah, i think as far as the single, they just picked the most comercial sounding song, like they did with "closer."

Some good bands if you are into lit/indie rock:
The Decemberists- An anachronistic Victorian sound, very original. Sometimes labled as Folk/Pop/Rock. Belle and Sebastian- The Boy with the Arab Strap and If You're Feeling Sinister are probably their best albums. Augie March- Australian band composed of great musicians with great poetic lyrics. "Strange Bird" is one of my top albums. Broken Social Scene- Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think their great. Modest Mouse- Their new ablum was good, but "The Moon and Antarctica" is their strongest I'd say. The Postal Service- Techno-ish, but still good if you're not into techno.

When I was young my family had a maid who listened to WOKJ in Jackson, an urban pop station that would often throw a gospel tune into the mix of soul and r&b singles. Whenever one of those gospel songs came on Maddie would turn the volume up. It was on that radio station that I heard and grew to love artists like the Blind Boys, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Mahalia Jackson, The Caravans, etc.
I remember one gospel song this station used to play a lot, Precious Lord. It was by a female, but not Mahalia Jackson. I wish I could remember who it was; it was a beautiful version. Keep America Safe AND Free!

Mmmm, Dan. I like the look of that record list. Excuse me while I accost you like a frightfully boring stranger at an interesting party.
Firstly, I'm glad to see that Belle and Sebastian are appreciated round your neck of the woods. Remain in the Light has to be one of my favourite records. And 69 Love Songs (but all of it, dammit! I got it as a triple CD set, and love it all (well, with a couple of exceptions)) Not having ever heard any of their songs before, I just bought an XTC best of, and it is particularly sweet. A friend did me a copy of Spike(?) by Elvis Costello a while back, and its fantastic... its got "Let Him Dangle" on it. Are "My Aim is True" and "This Yesr's Model" better than that? I don't know any other Costello. Have you ever heard any Aphex Twin? Some of its rather good. Ah, that's better.

Excuse me while I accost you like a frightfully boring stranger at an interesting party. It's cool, I get that a lot.
Firstly, I'm glad to see that Belle and Sebastian are appreciated round your neck of the woods. I'm in my mid-to-late twenties and living in Chicago. I'm pretty sure owning at least one Belle and Sebastian album is required by law. Ha ha, but seriously. They're great. Have you heard Architecture in Helsinki? Similar band, but with a bit more of an upbeat tone to their music.
Remain in the Light has to be one of my favourite records. It's up there, although I was torn for which Talking Heads album to go with. Speaking in Tongues came close. And although it's really just me on this one, Little Creatures is up there as well. (Television Man is probably my favorite song of theirs.)
And 69 Love Songs (but all of it, dammit! I got it as a triple CD set, and love it all (well, with a couple of exceptions)) I got nothing against the other two, vol. 2 just stands out for me. If nothing else, Papa Was a Rodeo is like liquid awesomeness in music form. Although really, if I was going to single out anything by the Magnetic Fields, it'd probably be a mix between all three volumes.
A friend did me a copy of Spike(?) by Elvis Costello a while back, and its fantastic... its got "Let Him Dangle" on it. Are "My Aim is True" and "This Yesr's Model" better than that? I don't know any other Costello. Hells. Yes. This Year's Model is probably his best album, and My Aim is True comes in a very freakin' close second. That being said, they're very different albums from Spike. They were recorded over ten years earlier, and he's just got a different sound at that point. Comparing them is a little futile. But it might be worth checking out Brutal Youth, which is the kind of "Hey! Let's do something old school!" album he did a few years after Spike. If it's the kind of thing you're into, the earlier stuff is worth checking out.
Have you ever heard any Aphex Twin? Nope. What are they like?

On a side-music note, does anybody here play an instrument?
Me, I play the banjo. Bluegrass-style. "You can't expect him to be answering your prayers when he's not real, can you? That's like writing to the characters of a soap opera and expecting a reply, Mr. Silly Sausage!" -Jane Christie
