I have seen many a forum etc where a debater is treated poorly.
I've been studying social science and have started thinking about whether the remarks made by debaters are justified or justifiable. Not necessarily in that order.
Would anyone in this site be willing to answer a short survey about the attitudes held by both groups of debaters towards their own and each others viewpoint and towards each other. From this survey I plan to draw up a profile of debaters and compare the findings.
Would Admin be willing to allow this study?
I'm hoping this posting is completly unbiased. Any apparent or actual bias is not meant, I assure you, and this is not a disclaimer. It's meant as reassurrance.

I will participate in a survey.
From the first day I found this site I thought that it was a psychologists gold mine.

Normally I figure I'm an outlier in most surveys, but given who's already signed up, I'm just one of the crowd. Count me in.

I'll participate, but I'm curious as to what methodology you'll be using.

I'd be willing to participate but would love to know how you differentiate between a debate, a discussion and an argument.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Questions and answers to the survey
1 Which is your OLV?
I don't have one. Not enough information.
2 Should schools teach your OLV only?
Certain classes pertaining to biology or philosophy should examine different hypotheses, but there should be a neutral tone within the class to eliminate bias and conjecture.
3 Do variations in colour, size or shape prove your OLV?
No.
4 Have you ever exaggerated a truth into an extreme in order to silence an opposing OLH?
No.
5 What is the scientific method?
Since I don't have an OLH, I don't propose one. I am aware of several theories though.
6 Do opposing OLHs make you lose control?
What?
7 Would you expect an apology to be given to a hurt OLH?
I would expect that in most dissenting viewpoints so, yes.
8 Do you research your answers to an opposing OLH's questions before giving them?
Yes.
9 Does your OLV put you above opposing OLHs in any way?
No.
10 Would a cruel answer to an OLH be acceptable to you?
Truth is truth. Truth, even when it hurts, is still the truth and would therefore be acceptable to me.
11 Would a rude answer by an OLH be acceptable to you?
Being needlessly rude is counterproductive in any debate.
12 Is it unreasonable that anyone should oppose your OLV?
I don't have one so, yes it would be unreasonable.
13 Are you any less respectful towards opposing OLHs than your fellow OLHs when correcting a mistake?
No.
14 Would you expect an apology if an an opposing OLH found they had hurt you?
What?
15 Do you expect opposing OLHs behave to a higher standard in their postings than your fellow OLHs?
I have no opposition.
16 Assuming that it has been proven that it takes millions of years to make a fossil, is it possible for the the reported age of
Assuming there are no flaws in radiometric dating.
Neanderthal fossils to be tens of thousands of years?
That is certainly within the realm of possibility.
17 Would it concern you at all if you knew you had upset somebody deeply?
Nope, because more than likely it's a psychological response (cognitive dissonance).
18 How would you expect an opposing OLH to prove their OLV?
With evidence that can be measured with clear logic.
19 Would you want an apology if somebody hurt you in a posting?
I don't get hurt by people I don't know personally because of things they say.
20 Is it the opposing OLHs responsibility to prove themselves right and also to prove you wrong?
Absolutely
21What is you favourite proof of your OLV?
I don't have one.
22 Could you see yourself accepting any shared ground with the opposing OLHs, should shared ground be discovered?
I am open to all suggestions equally unless they are extremely ridiculous.
23 What would you change if this survey showed the criticism towards your fellow OLHs to be justified and unjustified towards the opposing OLHs?
It won't be an issue for me. I WANT the truth, even if it means that I'm wrong.
24 Do you hope this survey will persuade the opposing OLHs that your OLV is the right one?
Doesn't apply to me.
